Sky to Keep It Close vs Wings in Rematch

The Chicago Sky opened the 2024 WNBA season on the road against the Dallas Wings and will face them in the second game. The Wings beat the Sky 87-79 on opening night, which leans WNBA lines in favor of them again in the second game, which is also being played in Dallas.

However, in the season’s first game, the underdog Sky made the game interesting. The Sky had a two-point lead with just over three minutes left, but Arike Ogunbowale dominated in the fourth quarter, leading to the Wings’ win.

  • Against the spread, Dallas was 23-14-0 last season.
  • The Sky won five, or 26.3%, of the 19 games they played as underdogs last season.
  • Chicago put together a 17-16-0 record against the spread last season.

Reese, Sky Put Up Fight Despite Absence of No. 3 Pick Cardoso

Last season, the Sky had the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference and are now transitioning through a rebuild. That was represented by them making two big first-round draft picks when they drafted Kamilla Cardoso third overall and then took Angel Reese with the seventh pick.

Cardoso is injured and will miss four to six weeks, but Reese made a significant impact in her first game. She is one of the many high-profile players from this recent draft class, and she showed that by scoring 12 points and grabbing eight rebounds.

The Sky starting lineup found success, with all five players in double figures, led by Marina Mabrey, who had 19 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Diamond DeShields also had 14 points while Dana Evans added six assists for an all-around great first game for the Sky’s starting lineup.

It was an overall solid performance for the Sky, and with 3:16 left in the game, they were up 75-73 when Marina Mabrey made two three throws. However, the Sky would be outscored 14-4 for the remainder of the game. They didn’t have a closer or All-Star to finish the game while the Wings did.

Wings Need to Keep Relying on Arike Ogunbowale

In the fourth quarter against the Sky, the Wings All-Star, Ogunbowale, took over. She scored 14 of her 25 points in the final 10 minutes of the game, playing a massive part in the Wings win. It did take Ogunbowale 23 shots to put up that scoring production, but it got the job done.

With Satou Sabally out till at least after the Olympic break, a lot of the scoring load will fall on Ogunbowale’s shoulders. Sabally averaged 18.6 points last season, winning Most Improved Player of the Year.

However, Ogunbowale is not the only player who needs to step up in Sabally’s absence. Natasha Howard is another Wings player that can offer support, and she did so in the win against the Sky. Howard finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Teaira McCowan also had a big game with 18 points and 13 rebounds.

Despite being without Sabally, the Wings had enough talent in the season’s first game to be successful. Eventually, Ogunbowale will find her shooting touch and the Wings will be a dangerous team when she does.

Game Prediction: Wings Hold Off Sky Again

Given the season’s first game, it seems clear that the Wings are the better team and Ogunbowale will thrive with more of the offensive workload being placed on her shoulders. But the Sky were able to make the game interesting late and could do the same in the second straight matchup against the Wings.

This game could be challenging for WNBA picks because while the Wings should win, there is a good chance the Sky keep it close enough to cover.

Questions Of The Day

Who is going to lead this game in scoring?

Arike Ogunbowale should lead the game in scoring, like in the first matchup between these teams. She is one of the best scorers in the WNBA and will put up shots after losing her co-star to injury.
