Sky and Liberty To Meet for Second Time In Three Days

New York Looks To Stay Perfect at Home in 2023

The Liberty and Sky have a tough act to follow after Breanna Stewart’s basket with less than 10 seconds left to play lifted the Liberty to a one-point win on the road on Friday. Courtney Williams connected on a 3-pointer with 55 seconds to give Chicago the win. The teams combined for 20 3-pointers so keep that in mind when it comes time to make WNBA predictions.

New York is one of four teams still undefeated at home with Chicago 2-1 on the road so far this season.

When looking at the WNBA news, the road team has won three of the last four games between the Liberty and Sky with each of the last three meetings finishing under the total.

Check the injury report before making any WNBA picks. Chicago played without forward Isabelle Harrison and Morgan Bertsch and guard Rebekah Gardner. New York had its full roster this season in Friday’s win as guard Marine Johannes made her season debut and played 21 minutes. New York didn’t get forward/center Xan Hu or guard Jocelyn Willoughby into the game.

Stewart (+120) is first in the WNBA Most Valuable Player odds with teammate Sabrina Ionescu also among the top MVP candidates.

According to the WNBA odds, New York trails only defending champion Las Vegas in the WNBA’s projected regular-season win totals. Chicago comes in eighth.

Smith Making an Impact

As offseason moves went, Chicago’s signing of former Stanford forward Alanna Smith fell under the radar.Smith scored a total of 60 points in 27 games while playing for Phoenix in 2021 and Indiana in 2022. It has been a different story in her first season with the Sky. Smith scored a career-high 18 points in Friday’s loss while making all seven of her field-goal attempts and each of her four 3-pointers.

If Chicago had come up with a late defensive stop, it would be 3-0 in games when Smith scores in double figures as she scored 15 points in a win over Minnesota and finished with 14 points to go with 12 rebounds in a win over Dallas.

Chicago has covered against the WNBA betting lines in five of its last six games and is 5-2 against the spread in the last seven road games.

Providing Some Assistance

Breanna Stewart has not disappointed in her first season with the LIberty as she has scored in double figures in all five of New York’s games so far this season. Getting production from the fellow frontcourt players has been a hit-or-miss proposition.

In the previous three games, Betnijah Laney had a total of 13 points on 6-of-18 shooting while Kayla Thornton finished with 17 points. They combined for 29 points on 13-of-21 shooting (3-for-3 on 3-pointers) as the Liberty survived an off-shooting performance from star guard Sabrina Ionescu.

Laney hadn’t scored in double figures since the season opener and it was Thornton’s first game with more than 10 points since the last game won by the Dallas Wings in the 2022 playoff series against Connecticut in what was her second-to-last game with Dallas.

Something to consider for those who bet online: New York is 1-5 against the spread in its last six games.
