Las Vegas Bids for 12th Straight Win Over LA

Will Sparks Have Ogwumike for Rematch?

The Los Angeles Sparks held up pretty well in the matchup against the defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces considering that All-Star forward Nneka Ogwumike did not play. Her absence certainly played in the WNBA predictions.

The teams will meet for the second time in three days. This time, the game will be in Vegas as the Aces look to improve to 3-0.

The game will mark the return of Aces head coach Becky Hammon after the WNBA suspended her for two games following an investigation into bullying by former Aces forward Dearica Hamby. Ironically, Hamby will be on the court playing for Los Angeles on a night when the Aces will hold a ceremony to hand out WNBA championship rings.

The Aces shot 58% from inside the 3-point line in the first matchup with the starting lineup going 19 of 34 on two-point attempts. The Los Angeles starters actually made more two-point shots than the Aces did. Keep that in mind when making WNBA picks.

Las Vegas has won 11 games in a row against the Sparks. Los Angeles did cover in two of the last three meetings. The last road win in the series for the Sparks came in 2018. Three of the last four games between the Western Conference rivals finished under the WNBA odds total.

When looking at the WNBA news, keep an eye on the status of Los Angeles forward Ogwumike, who missed the previous game with a non-COVID related illness. The Sparks were already playing without forward Azura’ Stevens and guard Jasmine Thomas. The Aces are waiting for veteran guard Riquna Williams to be cleared to return to the court. She is currently listed as day-to-day.

The Aces’ A’ja Wilson (+250) and Kelsey Plum (+550) are tied for first and third in the WNBA Most Valuable Player odds. LA’s Ogwumike is sixth at +2200.

According to the WNBA playoff odds, Las Vegas (+110) is first in the odds to win the WNBA title while Los Angeles is tied for sixth at +3000.

Finding a New Home

In the first game against the Aces, three of the starters for Los Angeles played for Miller when he coached the Connecticut Sun.Chiney Ogwumike led the way with 19 points, Lexie Brown had 15 points and five assists while Layshia Clarendon finished with eight points and six assists.

Joyner Holmes, who appeared in 26 games for the Sun during the 2022 season, added six points and five rebounds off the bench.

The list of former Sun players will be growing once Thomas is cleared to return to the court as she recovers from a knee injury suffered during the 2022 season. Miller also picked up former Sun first-round pick Nia Clouden on waivers. However, she did not play in the loss to Vegas after getting on the court for six minutes in a season-opening win over Phoenix.

Four of the last five games played by the Sparks finished over the WNBA betting lines total.

Lighting It Up

On a team with former WNBA Most Valuable Players A’ja Wilson and Candace Parker, sweet–shooting guard Kelsey Plum and 2022 WNBA Finals MVP Chelsea Gray, it can be easy to forget that the fifth starter is pretty talented as well.

Jackie Young reminded those watching Thursday’s game why she was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 WNBA Draft as she had 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting to go with three assists and four steals.

Three of Young’s 10 games during the 2022 season with at least 20 points came against a Connecticut Sun team coached by Miller so she is well known by the opposing coaching staff.

Young is shooting 64.5% from the field in the first two games of the season and is 7 of 11 from 3-point range so slowing her down will be one of the points of emphasis for the Sparks on Saturday.

Something to consider for those who bet online: Five of the last six home games played by the Aces finished under the total.
