Injured Stars Headline Matchup

Headed into the game between the Seattle Storm and Washington Mystics on Tuesday, two key members could be missing from the lineup. With the All-Star game this Saturday, WNBA news was headlined by Jewell Loyd from the Storm and the Mystics’ Elena Delle Donne hurting their ankles in their team’s last game. Both players lead their team in scoring and were selected to play in the All-Star Game.

Storm Have Lost Five Straight

Not much was expected out of the Storm this season, fully going into their rebuild. Neither the offense nor the defense has been good, leading to the second-worst net rating. That has been a big reason why Seattle is currently on a five-game losing streak, allowing 91.4 points per game, the most in the league.

One of the season’s bright spots has been Loyd’s offensive play. She is leading the WNBA in points per game, averaging 24.9. However, it has not been pretty, with Loyd shooting 39% from the field. That carried over into the Storm’s last game, losing to the New York Liberty 80-76, in which Loyd shot 3-of-17 from the field and was 1-of-10 from three, before hurting her ankle in the fourth quarter.

While Loyd has put up solid offensive numbers, overall, it has not helped the Storm. They still average the ninth fewest points per game while having the worst offensive rating. That, mixed with the poor defense, makes Seattle a problematic team to back in WNBA picks.

Mystics Defense Swaying

The defense has been the anchor of the Mystics’ season. They allow the fewest points per game and have the second-best defensive rating. It has played a significant factor in keeping WNBA lines on the side of Washington.

However, recently, the defense has been challenged. The Mystics have the second-highest defensive rating over the last six games. They are giving up 89.7 points per game during that stretch. The offense has done enough to balance things out, leading to a 2-4 record, averaging 89.7 points per game.

A big reason for the offense being so good in the last six games is that Delle Donne has been great, averaging 23.7 points in the three games she has finished. She missed two games, recovering from an ankle injury, then re-injured while facing the Connecticut Sun. Not having her in the lineup could change WNBA odds for the Mystics, especially if the defense continues to struggle.

Storm vs Mystics Picks and Prediction

With both teams possibly without their top players, that changes the WNBA spreads for this game. Both teams should struggle on offense. That could make this game an option to hit the under.

On top of that, the Mystics have more of a backbone to their team, which should help them win. Despite recent games, they still have one of the top defenses overall.
