Sun Huge Favorite to Beat Sparks for 11th Straight time

It is fair to wonder whether Curt Miller has any regrets leaving his job as the head coach of the Connecticut Sun to take over as the coach for the Los Angeles Sparks. In the last two regular seasons, Connecticut is 39-14 while Los Angeles is 21-33. The WNBA spread has the Sun as a double-digit favorite heading into Tuesday’s matchup.

Connecticut has won its last 10 games against the Sparks and the last three were by an average of 11.7 points versus its former head coach. Los Angeles hasn’t won in Connecticut since 2020 with the Sun winning 10 of the last 11 home games with the Sparks. Thirteen of the last 16 games between the teams went under the total.

The WNBA betting line has Connecticut as the 13-point favorite. That is the largest line in the series since the Sparks were favored 16 points in a 2016 game. Connecticut has -950 odds to win the game outright while Los Angeles has +620 odds to pull off the huge upset.

Connecticut is third at +650 in the odds of winning the WNBA title while Los Angeles is only ahead of the Washington Mystics in the championship odds.

Rookies Cameron Brink, Rickea Jackson Look to Light Up Sun

Few scores in the 2024 WNBA season were as stunning as the Los Angeles Sparks overcoming a 15-point deficit to upset the two-time defending WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces on June 9 as the 10½-point underdog at home.

Rookies Rickea Jackson and Cameron Brink combined for 24 points, 11 rebounds and six blocked shots in the 96-92 win. Los Angeles hasn’t won since with losses to Seattle, Minnesota and Atlanta, with all three games coming on the road.

Jackson has 35 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and two steals in the last two games while Brink is coming off a 16-point game.

More of that will be needed from both of them in support of veteran forward Dearica Hamby. Hamby had her five-game run of double-doubles end with a loss to Atlanta the last time out.

Hamby scored in single digits in two of the three games versus Connecticut a season ago.

Los Angeles is 4-7-1 against the WNBA odds in its last 12 games.

Sun Shining as Home Favorite

Connecticut has its issues covering as a double-digit favorite a year ago. The Sun were 0-3 against the spread in its final three games in the 2023 season when favored by at least 10 points. That included an outright loss to the Minnesota Lynx.

Connecticut has been listed by the sportsbook odds as the double-digit favorite in each of its last two home games. The Sun rolled to a 17-point win over Washington behind 20 points from DeWanna Bonner and a 17-point win against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever with DiJonai Carrington scoring 22 points and helping to limit Clark to just 10 points.

Connecticut is 7-0 this season as a home favorite but just 4-3 against the spread.

Connecticut has covered in five of its last six games.

Sparks Wary of Triple-Double Machine Alyssa Thomas

Los Angeles is last in the WNBA with an average of 16.6 points in the second quarter of games. That is 4.2 fewer points per game in that quarter than the Sun. Connecticut leads the WNBA with a +4.6 scoring margin in the second quarter while the Sparks are last at -4.7.

Six of the previous seven times that Los Angeles came to Mohegan Sun Arena, the game landed under the total. That changed in the most recent meeting as Alyssa Thomas of the Sun had a triple-double with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 14 assists. It was her sixth triple-double of the season. DeWanna Bonner added 25 points in the 90-76 win. The game went over the 151½-point total with 4:02 to play.

Hamby and former UConn forward Azura Stevens each had 18 points for Los Angeles. Stevens has yet to play this season and she could be out once again for the Sparks. Veteran guard Moriah Jefferson is expected to miss the game for the Connecticut Sun.

Connecticut has covered in the last eight meetings with the Sparks.

There are some familiar names on the Sparks that the Connecticut fans will remember. Layshia Clarendon and Lexie Brown formerly played for Miller with the Sun while Kia Nurse is a former UConn star.

The total has gone under in six of the last eight games for the Sparks. The Sparks are 10th in the WNBA in scoring offense and field-goal percentage while Connecticut is the hardest team to score against, so perhaps this game will land under the 153½-point total.
