Third Place Against Third-Worst

The WNBA’s Friday night action features a four-game slate. The Connecticut Sun (19-7) against the Indiana Fever (7-19) is a part of the first doubleheader of the night. The Sun sit in third place, while the Fever are in 10th.

Indiana snapped its four-game losing streak with a 72-71 win over the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday. Connecticut is 4-1 and 3-2 against the spread (ATS) in its previous five games. WNBA odds favor the Sun by eight points. Will the Fever pull off the upset?

Thomas Erupts for Historic Triple-Double

Connecticut’s calling card has been defense, ranking second in defensive rating. The Sun have held opponents to under 41% in four of their last five games. Only one team in the WNBA shoots under 41% – the Seattle Storm at 40.6%.

Indiana ranks fifth in field goal percentage by attacking the paint. The Fever average 38.2 points in the paint (fourth). This could be a good test for Connecticut’s defense, which showed cracks in the armor on July 30, with the Minnesota Lynx shooting better than 57% from the floor. In the season-opener, Indiana shot only 33.3% against the Sun.

Forward Alyssa Thomas comes off an incredible performance, recording 21 points, 20 rebounds and 12 assists. This was the first 20-20-10 triple-double in WNBA history. This was also Thomas’ second straight game with a triple-double. The sportsbook has Thomas as the third choice to win the MVP Award (+2000).

Fever Looking to Attack Boards

Indiana is clearly outmatched against Connecticut. The Fever were not a favorable WNBA pick in July, going 2-9 and 4-7 ATS. The offense has struggled over the last three, averaging 67.3 points while shooting 40.9% from the field.

Attacking the glass will be a major key for Indiana. The Fever rank fifth in rebounds per game, compared to the Sun at seventh. Indiana is also second in second-chance points per game. The Fever outrebounded the Mercury by seven and totaled 11 offensive boards on Tuesday. Indiana must follow the same formula to contend with Connecticut.

This means the Fever will heavily rely on their frontcourt. Unfortunately, NaLyssa Smith suffered a stress fracture in her foot about three weeks ago. Her absence has led to some of Indiana’s struggles. Without Smith, forward Aliyah Boston must rise to the occasion. Over the last three games, Boston is averaging 10.7 points and eight rebounds. If Boston does not turn in a big performance, it’s unlikely that the Fever will cover the Las Vegas WNBA odds’ point spread.

Sun vs Fever Picks and Prediction

This matchup will likely be determined in the frontcourt. The Sun’s second-leading scorer – Brionna Jones – is out for the season with a torn Achilles. Connecticut still boasts a strong frontcourt, though. DeWanna Bonner has been posting big numbers with a 24.5-point average in her last four games. Thomas has been a triple-double machine.

Indiana’s rookie Boston could be overwhelmed in this matchup. The Fever will sorely miss Smith, which has been the case for nearly a month. Without second-chance opportunities, Indiana’s guards are not efficient enough to win this game. Back the Sun in WNBA predictions.
