Eastern Conference Rivals to Meet Again

Sun One of Two 2-0 Teams in WNBA

The Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystics are set to meet for the second time in three days with the WNBA predictions looking for Washington to bounce back from Sunday’s road loss. The Mystics led heading into the fourth quarter before three missed free throws and three turnovers early in the quarter proved to be too much to overcome.

The Mystics led by as many as 12 points and held a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter before Connecticut took control as the Sun joined the Chicago Sky as the only two WNBA teams off to 2-0 starts.

The teams were a combined 8 of 30 from 3-point range with the starters going 3 of 22 from distance. Keep that in mind when making WNBA picks.

Connecticut has won seven of the last eight meetings between the teams. The lone win came the last time the Mystics welcomed the Sun to town. Washington had double-digit leads in each of the last two matchups only to lose each time.

Washington’s Elena Delle Donne (+700) is tied for fourth and Connecticut’s Alyssa Thomas (+2500) is eighth in the WNBA Most Valuable Player odds.

According to the WNBA playoff odds, Washington (+1200) is third in the odds to win the WNBA title while Connecticut is fifth at +2300.

Frontcourt Shines For Sun

The starting backcourt of Tiffany Hayes and Natisha Heideman are off to slow starts as they are a combined 9 of 38 from the floor and 3 of 13 from 3-point range. Add in reserve guard Tyasha Harris missing eight of her first nine shots and three of her first four 3-pointers and the Sun are still looking to get going from the perimeter.

The good news for the Sun is that the starting frontcourt of Alyssa Thomas, DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones combined for 50 points, 29 rebounds and 11 assists in Sunday’s win. They had 50 points and 27 rebounds in a season-opening win over Indiana.

Olivia Nelson-Ododa and Rebecca Allen came off the bench to combine for 11 rebounds, three blocked shots and 12 points in the first meeting against Washington as Connecticut’s bench outscored Washington’s reserves 16-9.

Connecticut has covered against the WNBA betting lines in 10 of its last 14 games.

Austin a Rising Star for Mystics

With seven players on the Washington roster age 28 or older, it might be easy to overlook some of the rising stars on the Mystics team.

Second-year post player Shakira Austin was a handful for the Sun frontcourt in Sunday’s loss. Austin was 10 of 14 from the field and had 21 points and 11 rebounds after a quiet season opener against New York.

Austin also had a double-double in her second game as a rookie as she had five double-doubles in her debut season.

Ariel Austin, a 26-year-old guard, is also a double-digit scorer for the Mystics with a total of 23 points in the first two games of the season. She has scored in double figures in each of her last six games against Connecticut.

Something to consider for those who bet online: Washington is 8-2-1 against the spread in its last 11 home games.

Sun vs Mystics Picks and Prediction

Things got pretty physical in the first matchup of the season between the teams as the Mystics and Sun combined to shoot 58 free throws and had just eight fast-break points. Three different players had five fouls.

Washington covered against the WNBA spreads in each of the three games last season with each game going under the total. Those trends ended in Sunday’s matchup. Don’t be surprised to see Washington to win the rematch at home on Tuesday.

The Sun missed eight of its first nine shots and only connected on 37% of its shots and still came away with the win. The teams have split the last eight meetings in Washington. The last time that Sun forward Thomas, a former University of Maryland star, played in Washington, she was held to four points. However, in a 2020 game, she flirted with a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists.

The Connecticut Sun is listed at +180 in our Las Vegas basketball odds. This means that if you wager $100 on the Sun, you have a chance to win $180. The Washington Mystics are priced at -220, offering a chance to win $45 on a $100 wager.

The implied probability attached to the betting lines gives the Sun a 35.71% chance to win, with the Mystics at 68.75%.
