Dallas Jockeying for Playoff Positioning

The Connecticut Sun (21-8) and Dallas Wings (15-14) will cap the WNBA’s Saturday doubleheader. The Sun are in third place in the WNBA standings while the Wings are in fourth. Dallas is in a logjam, holding the same record as the fifth-place Atlanta Dream. The Wings will look to separate themselves with a win, but Connecticut has a comfortable six-game cushion over Dallas in the standings.

The sportsbook has the Sun as the favorite. They have been tabbed as one of the championship contenders and have won three of their last four games while going 2-2 against the spread (ATS). The Wings are on a three-game losing streak while going 0-3 ATS. Check out our game preview for Saturday’s clash.

Thin Frontcourt Troubling the Sun

Connecticut had its three-game winning streak snapped on Thursday with a 90-84 loss against the Phoenix Mercury, who have the third-worst record in the WNBA. DeWanna Bonner, who leads the Sun at 18.3 points per game, left early in the game with a back injury. This immediately gave Phoenix’s frontcourt the upper hand, as center Brittney Griner posted 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Bonner is questionable for this game. Connecticut’s frontcourt could be thin, as Brionna Jones is also out for the season. Alyssa Thomas could be the key against the Wings. More pressure will fall on Thomas, especially if Bonner is out. Thomas continues to stuff the stat sheet, averaging 17 points, 12.5 rebounds, nine assists and 2.3 steals in her last four games. According to WNBA odds, Thomas is the third choice to win the MVP Award (+1000). Breanna Stewart (-170) and A’ja Wilson (+200) are the popular WNBA picks, but Thomas could move up in the race with another big performance.

Wings Look to Attack the Paint

Las Vegas odds have Dallas as the third choice to win the WNBA Championship (+2000). The Wings have shorter odds than the Sun, yet they are six games behind Connecticut in the standings. It’s unlikely that Dallas can pass the Sun before the postseason. The Wings could begin to chip away with a win on Saturday.

Dallas’ plan could be clear. Connecticut’s frontcourt is thin, and the Wings rank first in second-chance points per game and in points in the paint per game. Forwards Natasha Howard (17.3 points per game) and Satou Sabally (18 points per game) could be in store for monster days. Howard is averaging 20.7 points in her last three games, and Sabally has posted at least 18 points in five consecutive games.

The defense must tighten up, though. It has allowed 104 points in three consecutive games. Dallas ranks seventh in defensive rating.

Sun vs Wings Betting Lines

Sun vs Wings Picks and Prediction

With Bonner’s questionable status, WNBA lines are favoring the Wings. This game could come down to if Bonner plays. Dallas features one of the WNBA’s best frontcourts. Fortunately, Bonner is probable for Saturday’s game. While Bonner could not produce at her usual rate, it should be enough for Connecticut to cover the spread.

Guard Tiffany Hayes has also stepped up her play, averaging 14.8 points in the last four. The Sun should have plenty of scoring to hang with the Wings. Remember, Dallas has allowed over 100 points in three consecutive games. The Minnesota Lynx rank last at 84.8 allowed points per game. The Wings’ struggling defense is alarming. Take advantage of Connecticut’s underdog odds.
