The Indiana Fever Have the 2 Best Wins in the WNBA This Season

Fever Have Now Won Games vs. the Top 2 Contenders for This Year’s WNBA Finals

Another W for the Fever!

On the surface, the Indiana Fever (8-8) are a middle-of-the-pack team in the WNBA standings this season. They haven’t strung together a 3-game winning streak, and superstar guard Caitlin Clark has missed almost half of the games with injuries.

Yet, Tuesday night was a reminder of why this team generates the most WNBA news and excitement, and they did so with Clark sidelined with a groin injury. The Fever were able to shake off an early 27-14 deficit to shock the Minnesota Lynx in a 74-59 comeback win to claim the Commissioner’s Cup for the first time.

What is the Commissioner’s Cup? Think of it as the WNBA’s version of the NBA’s in-season tournament, except it started first in 2021. By defeating Minnesota in the championship game, the Fever receive a trophy and $500,000, which works out to about $30,000 per player—nice bonus money for players who don’t have NBA-sized salaries.

The upset was such a surprise that ESPN got caught floating out a post-game headline too early about how the Lynx cruised past the Clark-less Fever. Welp. That’s why WNBA games are 40 minutes.

Hell, even the Fever seemed surprised and may have enjoyed their unexpected win with more booze than the Thunder did after winning Game 7 against the Pacers:

Clark amusingly gave a recovery message to performer Red Panda, who had an accident during the halftime show, before teammate Sydney Colson jumped in with “I don’t think Red Panda is on my sh*t” on her Instagram Live.

Fever’s Big Wins a Sign of Things to Come?

But what a surprise after the Fever, who became an 11-point underdog after the news that Clark was out, dismantled Minnesota over the final quarters. Keep in mind, Minnesota had a league-best 14-2 record and +11.2 scoring differential.

Napheesa Collier has been the odds-on MVP favorite, but she scored 12 points on 6-of-18 shooting in this game, so don’t lock that award up just yet.

Last season, the Lynx lost the WNBA Finals to the New York Liberty, who were then 9-0 to start this season before Clark’s huge day (32 points) buried them in their first loss of this season.

That gives Indiana quite arguably the two best wins in the WNBA this season over the main title contenders, proving this team can play with and beat anybody.

Also, it’s hard to say the Fever have come anywhere close to peaking yet this season. Clark has only played in 9 games, and her shooting has been feast or famine. She can certainly play better, and the team still managed this huge win without her—something they wouldn’t have been able to do last season.

This team is growing in confidence even as the WNBA rumors of disrespect for Clark continue. The players only gave her the 9th-highest vote share in the All-Star team pol, while she was No. 1 in fan voting to become a captain.

Granted, she hasn’t brought her best stuff yet this season and didn’t have to be a captain, but No. 9 in a 13-team league? Give me a break.

Guess the Fever will just have to hope they have a bigger celebration with fancier alcohol waiting for them this fall in the playoffs. Tuesday night shows anything is possible.
