Now or Never for the New York Liberty
The Dallas Wings couldn’t have better timing. While it hasn’t always gone smoothly, Dallas has won four games in a row and is sitting comfortably in the sixth spot in the current WNBA standings. Dallas is three games ahead of New York heading into Monday’s matchup.
New York is one of five teams separated by just one game and only two of those squads will qualify for the playoffs.
Dallas is 7-9 at home. The Wings will need to win on Monday without former scoring champion Arike Ogunbowale, who will miss the game due to a hip injury. New York is 5-10 on the road this season.
Dallas (+4000) is sixth and New York (+5000) is tied for seventh in the odds to win the WNBA championship according to the WNBA playoff odds.
New York’s Sabrina Ionescu (+1400) is fifth in the odds to win the WNBA’s Most Valuable Player award. She is the first player in WNBA history with at least 500 points, 200 rebounds and 200 assists in the same season.

Laney Back for the Liberty
The result of the most recent game was a disappointing 14-point loss on the road to Phoenix against a team missing both Skylar Diggins-Smith and Diana Taurasi. However, there was some good news. Betnijah Laney, who averaged 16.8 points during her first season with the Liberty, returned to action for the first time May 17.
Laney, who was averaging 13.3 points in four games at the time of her injury, had seven points and four rebounds in 21 minutes of action.
The return of Laney gives New York the team it thought it had coming into the season. With the Liberty in a fight to make the playoffs, the timing of her return couldn’t be better.
The Liberty had nine players see at least 12 minutes of action in the loss to Phoenix so three will be options that weren’t available earlier in the season
Something to consider for those who bet online, New York is 3-5-1 against the spread over the last nine games.
Wings Players Getting in the Mix
There is little questioning that Ogunbowale is one of the most gifted offensive players in the WNBA. However, the issue in Dallas has often been getting others involved.
During its current four-game winning streak, Ogunbowale is averaging 16.5 points per game to go with 4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 3 steals per game.
The key has been Teaira McCowan (18 points, 14 rebounds), Marina Mabrey (16.8 points, 4.8 assists), and Kayla Thornton (15.5 points, 6.8 rebounds) stepping up and giving Dallas multiple offensive options.
Dallas posted back-to-back wins over defending champion Chicago and Las Vegas. That was followed up by the Wings rallying from a 12-point halftime deficit for an overtime win over last-place Indiana despite losing Ogunbowale during the game due to a hip injury.

Dallas has covered against the Las Vegas odds in five of its last seven games. However, the Wings are just 2-5 against the spread in their last seven contests at home.

Liberty vs Wings Prediction
Obviously, Dallas will miss the offensive production of Ogunbowale as well as talented young post player Satou Sabally, who has also been ruled out of the game. This is the third game this season that Dallas hasn’t had Ogunbowale and the Wings won the previous two games.
Dallas has won six of the last eight games against New York and that includes the last two contests. In the first meeting of the year between the teams, the Wings won 81-71 on the road. Dallas didn’t have Sabally for that game either, although Ogunbowale did score 21 points.
Three of the previous five games between the teams have been decided by three points or less. The last road win by New York against Dallas came in 2017.
Dallas listed as a five-point favorite without its top scorer might be asking a little much. New York will be in desperation mode with so many teams battling for the final playoff spots. New York has covered in just one of its last five games but that is a trend that could be in jeopardy.
