Dallas Tries to Get Right Against Phoenix

On Tuesday, the Dallas Wings will travel to face the Phoenix Mercury. Neither team has been great in the Western Conference, with losing records. However, WNBA lines do lean towards the Wings, who have only lost two straight games, compared to the Mercury losing in the last five.

Wings Defense Not Keeping Up

The Wings have hit a slump recently, especially over the last six games, only winning once. This stretch has affected how the sportsbook looks at the team, especially with the defense being such a big part of the recent slide.

Over the last six games, Dallas has allowed the third most points per game, 88.7. The defense has been an issue for the Wings all season, ranked 10th in points per game and eighth in defensive rating. They have allowed 90 or more points three times in the last six games.

However, through most of the season, the poor defense has been balanced out by the excellent offense. Despite the last six games, Dallas still averages 83.6 points per game and an offensive rating of 101.6, both ranked sixth. Arike Ogunbowale remains the leading force on offense, averaging the third most points per game in the WNBA, 22.4.

Mercury Fires Head Coach

This season has not gone how the Mercury may have imagined. In Brittney Griner’s return, Phoenix is 2-10, despite her averaging 19.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.

Phoenix has lost five straight games, partly due to Griner and Diana Taurasi missing three. They did return in the last game, which was a 97-74 loss to the Seattle Storm. The loss to the Storm prompted the Mercury to take action, headlining WNBA news by firing head coach Vanessa Nygaard the next day.

Interim head coach Nikki Blue will have a chance to change some things for a team with the worst record in the WNBA. However, with Griner being 32 and Taurasi 41 years old, there is not a lot of hope they will reach a new level offensively. On top of that, Mercury’s defense is already the worst in the league, giving up the most points per game.

Wings vs Mercury Picks and Prediction

Neither team comes into this game playing well. Defense for both teams has been an issue, which could lead to a high-scoring game. However, Dallas has a more consistent offense, which has not dipped too much despite the recent record, making them a solid option for WNBA picks. With how bad the Mercury are on defense, they should open up more for the Wings’ offense to win the game.
