USFL North Division Teams Seek First Win

Northern Divisional teams will each be aiming for their first win of the season when the New Jersey Generals and Pittsburgh Maulers meet on Sunday.

Both teams started off the season with a loss after a couple of rough offensive showings. The Generals had a strong inaugural season in 2022, finishing 9-1, but didn’t start that way in their second year, falling 27-10 in the first game. Pittsburgh was the opposite, winning just one game last season, and it started out its season the same way with a 22-15 loss.

Generals Drop Off

New Jersey was toward the top of the league in both offense and defense last year, which helped it finish at the top of the USFL, but neither of those units showed up in its first game.

Though their offense was able to rack up yardage and reach the red zone four times, finishing with 361 yards, the Generals could only convert on one of their red zone chances, finishing with 10 points.

The defense was not any better, allowing the Stallions to finish with 310 yards on 6.3 yards per play. Most of the damage came through the air as Birmingham had 223 total passing yards and two passing touchdowns.

New Jersey needs to get back to the winning formula it had in 2022 to pick up its first win.

Maulers Can’t Come Back

Although the Maulers and Breakers kept it close for the majority of the game, Pittsburgh couldn’t overcome a late-game touchdown from New Orleans to secure a win.

Pittsburgh tied it up at 15 late in the fourth quarter, but its defense couldn’t contain quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson and Co. on the ensuing drive as they went 50 yards to retake the lead.

The defense wasn’t the main issue, however, as the offense appeared static for most of the game, recording just 156 total yards on 3.3 yards per play and going 0-for-3 in the red zone.

The Maulers’ offense will have to find a rhythm if they want to get a win soon.

Generals vs Maulers Head-to-Head

The Generals and Maulers played twice last year, with New Jersey winning both games. The two last met on June 3, 2022, when New Jersey won 29-18.

Generals vs Maulers Picks and Prediction

  • Predicted Score: Generals 18, Maulers 10

Worth Betting ATS?

Thugh the Generals got blown out in their first game, that shouldn’t be the case this week. The Maulers, despite the score, struggled to show up in their first game as well. New Jersey should be able to bounce back enough to do a bit of damage on the Maulers’ defense and cover the five-point spread from the USFL lines.

Worth Betting on the Totals?

After both teams’ offenses were so slow in week one, it’s surprising to see the sportsbook set the over/under at 36½. The teams went a combined 1-for-7 in red zone chances last week, and while it’s likely that won’t be the case this time, taking the under still seems like a safe bet.
