Battle Between the Winless

XFL’s Week 5 action features a clash between 0-4 teams, as the Orlando Guardians visit the Vegas Vipers. Both teams have experienced their fair share of blowout losses, especially the Guardians. The Vipers suffered a couple of heartbreaks, including a last-minute 30-26 loss against the Seattle Sea Dragons in Week 3.

Without surprise, XFL lines have Orlando (+5000) and Vegas (+3000) as the least likely to win the championship. Even making the playoffs looks nearly impossible. Which squad will finally grab its first win?

Guardians Spiraling Out of Control

Orlando finally made progress in Week 3 with a 10-9 loss – its first competitive game. The Guardians fell back to their old ways in Week 4, falling to the Houston Roughnecks 44-16.

As usual, the offensive line struggled, four allowing sacks. Orlando had two turnovers and more than 100 yards in penalties. This combination will never lead to wins. It’s difficult to find anything positive about this team. Terrell Buckley and his coaching staff seem lost. An XFL coach on the hot seat four games into the season is a big surprise.

After the Guardians allowed 30 or more points in three of four games, sport bets on the over are a near-lock against competent teams. Quarterback Paxton Lynch is pretty much the only positive XFL news for Orlando. He’s played well in back-to-back games after being benched mid-game in Week 1.

Vipers Full of Mistakes

The Vipers’ season is nearly too far gone. However, Vegas is at least pursuing solutions. Ray Sherman was brought in as the new offensive coordinator for Week 4. Quarterback Luis Perez should be the starter from now on after Brett Huntley got his shot.

In the 32-18 loss against the D.C. Defenders, the Vipers’ offense made progress. Perez totaled 283 passing yards and two touchdowns. However, the unit is still making critical mistakes. It had two turnovers and went 3 of 10 on third downs. While Vegas outgained D.C. in yardage, it wasn’t close due to costly mistakes. Like the Guardians, it’s been difficult to side with the Vipers in XFL picks, but something has to give in Week 5.

Don’t expect Vegas’ defense to improve anytime soon. It surrendered 173 rushing yards on 4.4 yards per carry against the Defenders. Orlando’s run game is actually efficient at four yards per carry, and Lynch has played well. It could be another long day for the Vipers’ defense.

Guardians vs Vipers Head-to-Head

In the 2020 season, the Guardians were located in New York and the Vipers were in Tampa Bay. The Guardians dominated the matchup 23-3.

Guardians vs Vipers Picks and Prediction

Predicted Score: Vipers 18, Guardians 16

  • Worth Betting ATS?

As usual, the sportsbook has the Guardians as sizeable underdogs (-7½). However, I am quite confident Orlando covers this week. Vegas’ defense has been putrid. The Guardians’ offense is progressing with Lynch. Plus, the Vipers have a bad run defense, and Orlando has an efficient run game.

  • Worth Betting on the Totals?

The projected total is at 42. Take the under. These teams are littered with mistakes, whether it be failed third downs or turnovers. Saturday could be a comedy of errors, leading to few points scored.
