2026 Belmont Stakes Picks & Contenders
Renegade (+200)
- Career record: 6 starts – 2 wins – 3 seconds – 1 third
- Career earnings: $2,031,500
- Pedigree: Into Mischief – Spice Is Nice, by Curlin
- Running style: Closer
If Renegade had not been bumped and jostled during a brutal trip at Churchill Downs in May, he would likely have been the Kentucky Derby winner. But according to the Belmont Stakes live odds, the oddsmakers are not holding his second-place Derby finish against him, as he is currently the betting favorite. Renegade is a closer, so the extra distance at 1 ½ miles would have benefited him, but he is still the horse to beat even at 1 ¼ miles.
Chief Wallabee (+400)
- Career record: 4 starts – 1 win – 1 second – 1 third
- Career earnings: $466,600
- Pedigree: Constitution – A La Lucie, by Medaglia d’Oro
- Running style: Stalker
Like Renegade, Chief Wallabee had a rough ride at the Kentucky Derby and wound up in fourth place, three lengths behind the winner. Those horse racing handicappers making their Belmont Stakes betting picks universally point to Chief Wallabee being a top-tier racehorse, but just a half click below the truly elite, in consecutive losses to Commandment while finishing behind three other Belmont entries in the Derby. We should also note that Chief Wallabee has yet to win at a distance of a mile or more, only tasting victory in his debut at seven furlongs.
Golden Tempo (+450)
- Career record: 5 starts – 3 wins – 0 seconds – 2 thirds
- Career earnings: $3,433,000
- Pedigree: Curlin – Carrumba, by Bernardini
- Running style: Closer
Golden Tempo was a 23-1 long shot at the Kentucky Derby and shocked the field with a gritty charge down the stretch to nip Renegade at the finish line. His trainer, Cherie DeVaux, became the first woman to win the Kentucky Derby and opted to skip the Preakness Stakes to allow her horse to rest and be as fit as possible for the Belmont Stakes.
However prescient that decision may ultimately be, it did remove Golden Tempo from Triple Crown contention, much to the chagrin of horse racing fans everywhere. Yet, a well-rested Derby winner under the guidance of a white-hot jockey in Jose Ortiz makes Golden Tempo a logical choice as one of the Belmont Stakes’ best bets in a much shorter field.
2026 Belmont Stakes Longshot Predictions
Growth Equity (+1200)
- Career record: 4 starts – 2 wins – 2 seconds – 0 thirds
- Career earnings: $187,600
- Pedigree: Nyquist – My Dear Venezuela, by Wildcat Heir
- Running style: Stalker
This is a true wild card horse that has never faced any of the Belmont entries. The Chad Brown-trained colt has won by 4 ½ lengths as a pacesetter in his maiden debut, and then patiently stalked the field at the Peter Pan Stakes to win that Grade 3 event by two lengths at 1 1/8 miles.
As impressive as Growth Equity has been, many will rule him out as one of the Belmont Stakes payouts because he has yet to face company this classy and could be overwhelmed early.
Ocelli (+1500)
- Career record: 8 starts – 0 wins – 1 second – 4 thirds
- Career earnings: $729,800
- Pedigree: Connect – Zalia, by Scat Daddy
- Running style: Closer
A horse that has never finished first is not a likely choice for anyone’s 2026 Belmont Stakes predictions, but Ocelli has waged war with some very classy company. He will also be the only horse at the Belmont that has run in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
The two-week turnaround time between each Triple Crown jewel is grueling, to say the least, which is why Triple Crown winners are becoming increasingly rare. Ocelli’s trainers are throwing caution to the wind, believing he can withstand the rigors of three world-class competitions over five short weeks, and they just might be right, which is why Ocelli could be a valuable piece of one’s Belmont Stakes trifecta picks.
Ottinho (+2000)
- Career record: 4 starts – 1 win – 1 second – 2 thirds
- Career earnings: $324,700
- Pedigree: Quality Road – Quiet Giant, by Giant’s Causeway
- Running style: Closer
It could be perilous to one’s bankroll to disqualify the long shot in this one. Ottinho has hit the board in all four of his races, and his last effort was an impressive second-place finish at the Grade 1 Bluegrass Stakes in April. This horse is built for distance, and although there are no true pacesetters in this race, he could shock the field with a hard charge down the stretch.
Assuming he hits the board yet again, Ottinho could be a valuable component in an exotic bet like a Belmont Stakes superfecta.

Belmont Stakes Betting Odds Explained
Belmont Stakes odds at BetUS follow a familiar format found in North America. The left number of the fraction is what a bettor stands to profit, while the right number is how much they must wager to earn that profit.
For example, if a horse has odds of 6/1, it means that the bettor will win $6 for every $1 wagered, in addition to receiving their original investment back. In this case, a dollar risked would return $6 plus the $1 investment for a total of $7.
Another way to express the fractions is through American moneyline odds using a plus (+) and minus(-) format. The former represents a return greater than the investment, while the latter signifies that the investment will be greater than the return.
For example, if a horse is -200, it means that a bettor must risk $200 to win $100 plus the return of their initial investment of $200 for a total of $300.
However, a plus sign indicates an underdog; thus, if a horse is +600 (as in the above example of 6-1), it means that a bettor will receive a profit of $600 for every $100 they risk, plus the return of their initial investment of $100 for a total of $700.
Belmont Stakes Exotic Wagers
One of the fundamentals of this Belmont Stakes betting guide is to explain how to bet on horse racing and where to place those bets. Win (betting the horse to finish first), Place (betting the horse to finish first or second), and Show (betting the horse to finish first, second, or third) are the three most common horse racing bets.
The more exotic wagers are as follows:
- Exactas (picking the first and second place finishers in exact order)
- Trifectas (picking the first, second, and third place finishers in exact order)
- Superfectas (picking the first, second, third, and fourth place finishers in exact order)
- Daily Doubles (picking the winner in two designated races, usually the first and second races on the card)
- Pick 3s/4s/5s/6s (picking winners of 3, 4, 5, or 6 races)
We should also note that the Belmont distance will be shortened for the third consecutive year from the traditional 1 ½ miles at Belmont to 1 ¼ miles at Saratoga. This could allow more upsets because all of the horses in the Belmont are stalkers and closers that rely on their stamina to win long races down the stretch.
However, due to track constraints at Saratoga, the distance is 1 ¼ miles, and it could allow a pace setter to steal the show. Make sure to review the Belmont Stakes exacta odds to possibly take advantage of this scenario.
Belmont Stakes Live Odds & Race-Day Betting
Belmont Stakes live odds can always be found at BetUS, but the post-position draw is not until June 1st. This is important because many jockeys and horses prefer an inside post position, and once those gates are announced, the odds can change markedly.

*Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the racing schedule was disrupted, and the Belmont was shortened from 1 ½ miles to 1 1/8 miles for the first time since 1920.
As we can see, four of the last 13 Belmont Stakes winners (Palace Malice, Creator, Sir Winston, and Dornoch) have had odds of 10-1 or higher, which means long shots have cashed 30.7% of the time over that span.
Belmont Park Track — History & Legacy
Belmont Park has been the traditional home of the Belmont Stakes, but due to the track’s $450 million renovations begun in 2024, the location of the premier race had to be shifted, and its aristocratic neighbor to the north, Saratoga Race Course, was a natural fit.
Due to Saratoga’s track layout, it is not able to comfortably accommodate a 1 ½ mile race, which is why it has been shortened to 1 ¼ miles over these past three years. This will be the last year that Saratoga will host the Belmont Stakes before it returns to the reimagined Belmont Park in 2027.
Saratoga Track Specs
- Main Track Distance: 1 1/8-mile (9-furlong) dirt oval.
- Main Stretch: 1,144 feet from the final turn to the finish line.
- Mellon Turf Course: 1-mile outer turf oval.
- Inner Turf Course: 7-furlong circumference track.
- Track Banking: 4% banking around the main dirt and turf courses
Belmont Stakes Highlights
Secretariat (1973) – The greatest Triple Crown winner in history blistered the pace and won by an astounding 31 lengths at the 1973 Belmont Stakes, setting a track record of 2:24.00 for the traditional 1 ½ -mile distance that remains to this day.
American Pharoah (2015) – The Bob Baffert-trained bay colt broke a 37-year drought and became the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978 by galloping to an uncontested 5 ½ length victory at the 2015 Belmont Stakes.
Justify (2018) – Justify broke to the front of the 2018 Belmont Stakes and never looked back, becoming only the second undefeated horse to win the Triple Crown after Seattle Slew did it in 1977. And in another historic first, jockey Mike Smith became the oldest jockey to win the Triple Crown at age 52.
