The Super Derby
The Super Derby is a nine-furlong Thoroughbred race that debuted in 1980, won that first year by Temperence Hill. Over the decades it has attracted some of the sport’s greats: Creme Fraiche, Alysheba, Seeking the Gold, and Sunday Silence all have their names on the trophy. In its richest years, bridging the ’80s and ’90s, the purse climbed as high as $1 million, which is why champions like Sunday Silence made the trip to Bossier City. Held in its September slot, the race has always had to compete with the Breeders’ Cup for top talent, but it remains the centerpiece of the Louisiana Downs Thoroughbred season.
