Some of the competitors are more well known than others. And then there are the horses that have created a buzz before they enter the starting gate.

A look at five of the most interesting runners.

1. A Filly to Behold

Her name is Tamara and she has a mother that was one of the best horses to grace a racetrack.

Tamara is 2-for-2 as she heads into the Juvenille Fillies Race on Friday. She is a daughter of the great Beholder.

Tamara is going to break from post 7 in a field of 13. She has been listed as the 4-5 favorite on the morning line.

She is trained by Hall of Famer Richard Mandella and will be ridding by Mike Smith.

When you are a daughter of Beholder, much is expected. Tamara has a chance to take a step toward her mom’s achievements on Friday.

2. Cody’s Wish

The horse whose story has moved so many is Cody’s Wish. His relationship with Cody Dorman, a young man is stirring.

Cody Dorman, now 17, has undergone multiple open-heart surgeries among the near 50 procedures in his life.

At the 2022 BC, we all learned about how the horse and Cody bonded.

Cody’s Wish is back for the 2023 BC Dirt Mile and will leave from post 3 and is 9-5 on the morning line.

On a week when tragedy has struck over and over – Practical Move (death), Geaux Rocke (injured)t Ride, Arcangelo (retired), the sport desperately needs a horse like Cody’s Wish to deliver a feelgood finish.

3. King of Steel

Talk about a whirlwind couple of races. King of Steel wheels right back after winning the Champion Stakes at Ascot on Oct. 21.

This would be one helluva twin win if he can pull off the victory in the 1½ miles BC Turf that carries a purse of $4 million.

One of the most charismatic jockeys will be on-board again as Frankie Dettori rides King of Steel who has been listed at 4-1 from post 11.

This would be an astounding performance if he is able to win the Turf after the victory at Ascot.

Remember, in addition to the race he is also shipping overseas to Santa Anita for this event.

4. Ushba Tesoro

With Arcangelo out of the Classic and retired, the spotlight goes to other horses in the $6 million Classic. One of those who is gaining a lot of attention – 4-1 on the morning line at the sportsbook is Japanese runner Ushba Tesoro.

The racing in Japan has risen through the years to the point horses are winning major races all around the world.

Ushba Tesoro is one of the best to come out of Japan. He won the Grade 1 Dubai World Cup.

Something to watch: He was schooled at the Santa Anita starting gate and the door or stall hit the horse and annoyed him. Apparently, the starting gates in Japan are formed differently and this could create a problem on Saturday for the $6 million Classic.

The key will be a clean getaway and no fussing in the gate.

5. Motorious

In the five-furlong Turf Sprint on Saturday, look out for trainer Phil D’Amato’s Motorious. He breaks from post 10 with Flavien Prat. D’Amato is absolutely devastating on the lawn in Southern California.

Motorious comes off a powerhouse win in the Green Flash at Del Mar. The video shows a horse that loves the turf and eats up ground and opponents with every stride.

Motorious has won 4 of his last 6 sprints and loves Santa Anita.

The competition will be tougher but he is a live play in Vegas odds for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint.
