Bet On Phillies To Keep Roll Going Against Favored Giants

The red-hot Philadelphia Phillies try to continue their hot streak in the third of a four-game weekend series when they play host to the San Francisco Giants on Sunday Night Baseball. Philadelphia has won four in a row to improve its MLB playoff odds by taking over first place in the NL East.

The Phillies lead the second-place Atlanta Braves by 1½ games for the top spot in the division, and they hold the top record in baseball by a half-game over the Baltimore Orioles.

Giants Need Solid Mound Effort

The Giants have been struggling on their current road trip. After a 14-3 loss Saturday night in which starter Keaton Winn didn’t make it out of the first and the team had to use five different relievers, San Francisco could use a quality start on Sunday.

Enter right-hander Logan Webb, who brings a 3-2 record and a 2.98 ERA to the mound for his eighth start. Webb has struck out 30 batters in 42⅓ innings.

Webb struggled in his first start on this road swing, lasting 3⅔ innings against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, allowing four runs on nine hits. But in his two starts prior to that outing, Webb had thrown a combined 15 shutout innings, allowing just eight hits while striking out nine.

Webb will be pitching to catcher Blake Sabol, the Giants’ third starting catcher in as many days due to injuries. On Friday night, Patrick Bailey took a foul ball to his face mask and was placed on the seven-day concussion list on Saturday.

As far as these things go, hopefully it’s mild,” San Francisco manager Bob Melvin said of Bailey. “Based on the fact that he’s had these before, it was an easy decision to make. He woke up with kind of the same conditions as last night. Hopefully, it’s just a seven-day thing. I think it was last year. But you can’t be too careful about this.

The 24-year-old was replaced in the starting lineup by Tom Murphy, but Murphy heard a pop in his knee when he went to block a wild pitch in the second inning Saturday, causing him to be removed from the contest with what could be a serious injury. That will leave Sabol, who was called up from Triple-A Sacramento to replace Bailey, to handle the duties behind the plate for the foreseeable future.

The Giants could use some offensive punch as well. First baseman Wilmer Flores hit his first home run Saturday night, a two-run shot, but all of the San Francisco offense came after the Phillies had already forged a 9-0 lead.

Phillies Try To Keep It Rolling

Things have really been coming together for the Phillies in the first month-plus of the 2024 campaign, and they’re just hoping to continue to ride the wave to success. With Saturday’s victory, Philadelphia has the most wins in the majors with 23 and has won 15 of its last 18 contests.

We’re getting good pitching, timely hitting and getting different people to contribute every night,” Philadelphia manager Rob Thomson said after Saturday’s win. “That’s the sign of a good team. We have to stay humble and just keep grinding out games.

The team will be tested with the news on Saturday that shortstop Trea Turner will be out for at least six weeks with a left hamstring strain. Turner is seventh in baseball with a .343 batting average, adding 10 doubles, two home runs, nine RBI and 27 runs scored.

The Phillies also had third baseman Alec Bohm depart Saturday’s contest with hip tightness, though he stated after the game that he plans to play on Sunday. Bohm extended his hit streak to 17 games with a second-inning single before leaving in the third. Bohm is leading the majors with a .364 batting average and is tied for the MLB lead with 32 RBI. He has hit 12 doubles, a triple and four home runs and has scored 18 runs.

Philadelphia will have righty Taijuan Walker making his second start. Walker had missed the start of the season with a right shoulder issue but made his season debut last Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

The 31-year-old lasted 6⅓ innings in that contest but struggled, allowing six runs on eight hits, including a pair of home runs. Walker went 15-6 with a 4.38 ERA in 31 starts for the Phillies last season.

Phillies Eke Out Another Win

The Giants have the edge on the mound, but their offense has been too inconsistent to expect them to come away with the win. Walker will certainly be better than in his season debut, which he got the win in thanks to his teammates supporting him with eight runs.

Philadelphia is playing with a ton of confidence, with everyone in the batting order contributing. That will continue on Sunday night, so your MLB picks should be on the Phillies to come away with yet another victory.
