Yankee Bats to Stay Hot in Opener vs Orioles

The New York Yankees, atop the American League East, will start a four-game series on the road against the Baltimore Orioles, the team in second place in the division. Both teams are the early favorites to win the division in MLB odds, making this an exciting first series.

The lineup is finally starting to get hot for the Yankees. After losing the opening game of three against the Milwaukee Brewers in extra innings, the Yankees erupted for 15 runs in each of the next two games to win the series.

On the other hand, the Orioles just lost a three-game series at home against the Oakland Athletics. After dropping the opener, they won the second 7-0 and, despite scoring six runs in the series finale, they still lost 7-6.

Pitching Matchup: Can Rodriguez Cool Off Yankees?

Early in the season, the Yankees have one of the best pitching staffs in the majors with a team ERA of 3.08, the second-best. The Orioles fell out of the top 10 in team ERA and are ranked 13th, but they are still solid at 3.87.

On the mound for the visiting Yankees will be Clarke Schmidt. He officially earned himself a spot in the starting rotation last season and has been a reliable option. Schmidt has a 3.55 ERA through five starts, having yet to allow more than three runs in a game. His last start wasn’t exactly his best, giving up three runs in 5.1 innings, but he did strike out six batters.

Grayson Rodriguez, one of the Orioles’ young hopeful stars of their pitching rotation, will be getting the start in this game. He had a great season until his last appearance. Before his previous start, when Rodriguez allowed seven runs in 4.1 innings off 11 hits, he had a 2.63 ERA. His ERA ballooned to 4.45 after his last outing but that could have just been an off day for him.

Yankees’ Bats are Scorching Hot

Before the weekend series against the Brewers, despite a lineup filled with star power, the offensive stats were not impressive for New York. In the 15 games before the Milwaukee series, the Yankees had only scored seven or more runs three times. They exploded for 30 runs over the last two games, which could be a shift for the team.

The big storyline from those two wins is that Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo started to hit, swatting home runs in both. Both players had been struggling, and going deep in back-to-back games might help them break out of this early-season slump.

Given that Orioles starter Rodriguez just had an outing in which he gave up 11 hits and seven runs, it seems like this is a chance for the Yankees to stay hot. On top of that, MLB lines could favor them because while Schmidt hasn’t dominated, he has been good enough to keep opponents in check. With all that being said, this feels like a game when the lineups take over, leaning it toward the over.
