LOUD wins against G2 to secure a playoff spot

A few days ago, the VCT Americas League Split 1 came to an end. Upsets, comebacks, and teams vying for a postseason berth were all part of the five-week Americas VALORANT festival. LOUD faced G2 Esports in the final regular season match, fighting not just for their own survival but also that of two other teams. Teams wanted to guarantee their postseason spot going into VCT Americas Week 5. Only four of the six teams—KRU Esports, Leviatan, 100 Thieves, and Cloud9—had guaranteed a postseason position prior to the weekly matchups. The results of this week’s games would determine the future of NRG, Sentinels, LOUD, G2 Esports, and Evil Geniuses. Group A’s competitors were NRG, G2 Esports, and Sentinels; Group B’s competitors were LOUD and Evil Geniuses. The teams’ qualifying depended on the results of the games between NRG vs 100 Thieves and G2 Esports vs LOUD. In order to have an opportunity to advance to the Mid-Season Playoffs, G2 Esports, LOUD, and NRG have to win their respective matches.

Match details

LOUD had a comeback against Sentinels, upsetting the Madrid Champions 2-0, following three poor games. Their expectations for a season comeback were sparked by the victory. The stakes were high as they took on G2 Esports. LOUD got out to a fast start on Bind and led by two rounds into the 2nd half. G2 Esports lost 1-0 despite rapidly catching up and failing to seal the deal. LOUD overwhelmed Icebox; Less and QCK’s outstanding performances gave them a 9-3 lead, which they later turned into a convincing 13-4 victory for the Brazilian team.

Sentinels out of playoffs

Sentinels, who went on to win the entire tournament and qualify for Masters Madrid alongside LOUD, were regarded as one of the greatest teams in the world. Sentinels couldn’t duplicate their achievement back home, though, after taking home the trophy in March.

Rather, the squad tied NRG Esports for the bottom spot after finishing Americas Stage 1 with a 3-3 record in the Alpha group. Sentinels had a 3-3 record, but if the other clubs fulfilled specific requirements, they had a remote chance of qualifying for the playoffs. Sentinels needed to defeat Furia 2-0, NRG needed to fall short against Evil Geniuses and 100 Thieves 0-2; and LOUD needed to defeat G2 0-2. Many were worried that Sentinels had no chance because of these particular conditions, but it almost happened.

The team’s destiny was ultimately going to be decided by a round count. But LOUD managed to accumulate 2 more rounds than Sentinels when they defeated G2 2-0. This meant that LOUD would advance instead, forcing Sentinels and NRG to sit out the playoffs.

Sentinels will no longer be present at Masters Shanghai, which implies that another team will win the championship and a new winner will be crowned. Sentinels still have Stage 2 competition once Shanghai ends, which will decide if they go to Champions at the end of the year, but this Stage 2 doesn’t start until mid June.
