Ssumday retires from competitive LoL
Kim “Sumday” Chan-ho, a League of Legends (LoL) pro from South Korea, declared on Twitter on May 7 that he was retiring from competition. After the 2023 season ended, the 27-year-old player started working for 100 Thieves as a streamer and content creator. Ssumday decided it was his “turn” to abruptly depart from League of Legends, and he will be serving his mandatory military duty in South Korea beginning in July. After finishing his military duty, Ssumday might make a comeback to the scene as a coach or streamer, but he might also land “another job outside of league.”
Ssumday’s story
After two years in the academy, the Korean top laner first gained notoriety in 2015 when he was appointed to the starting lineup of the KT Rolster. Ssumday won the LCK Regional Final, which guaranteed him a spot at Worlds despite his inexperience. Dignitas chose to bring the person over to the LCS, where he would play for the remainder of his long career, even though he wasn’t able to replicate his success the next year.
Ssumday, who is primarily recognized for his extensive tenure on 100 Thieves, had a critical role in the early success of the LoL team. Unfortunately, Ssumday only managed to win one championship in 2021, thus the results weren’t that good. In addition, that year marked 100T’s best world championship appearance; they finished the group stage with a 3-3 record and fell just short of winning one match to advance to the next round. The squad proved they had performed, especially when they managed to steal a victory against EDward Gaming, the 2021 world champion.

Uneventful last years
The Korean athlete maintained his impressive domestic performance but fell down in the second part of the 2023 season, finishing ninth in the LCS championship. In 2022, 100 Thieves returned to Worlds but were unable to go past the group stage once more. And in the subsequent year, 100 Thieves had to settle for second place twice despite coming very near on two separate times during the Spring and Summer Splits. To make matters worse, 100 Thieves was once again eliminated from the group stage during a back-to-back participation at Worlds.
Eventually, Ssumday would join Evil Geniuses for the 2023 season, but even that would only last until after the Spring Split. Naturally, EG was also experiencing a number of problems with its lineup at this same period. The team had already been a shadow of its former glory when he would later resign with 100 Thieves for the Summer Split of the previous year.

There is a 21-month maximum term for mandatory military service in South Korea, thus it will be some time before Ssumday returns to the League of Legends scene.
