Blue Jays Go for Sweep of Nationals

Guerrero on Tear for Toronto

The Washington Nationals and the host Toronto Blue Jays will finish a two-game set on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays bested the Nationals in the series opener 9-5 behind three home runs from first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Two of the bombs came off three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer.

The first pitch from TD Ballpark in Dunedin, Fla., is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. Erick Fedde will pitch for Washington and Steven Matz will throw for the Blue Jays.

Toronto is favored on the run line Wednesday night with a -165 moneyline odds. The Nationals are +145 to win, and the over/under has been set at 9½ runs.

Washington Nationals Preview

The Nationals threw their best pitcher on Tuesday but it backfired on the team. Scherzer was horrendous, going five innings and giving up five earned runs.

Scherzer was unable to locate his pitches, and the Blue Jays took advantage of his mistakes. Pitching and hitting have not seemed to come together for the Washington. On nights when the pitching is great, the hitting is lackluster, and vice versa.

The team has scored 67 runs, which puts them at 29th in baseball. They do have the 12th-ranked OBP in the league, but timely hits have been an issue. Outfielder Juan Soto went on the 10-day injured listed on Tuesday, which is a tough hurdle to overcome.

Soto is one of the best young stars in the game so the offense has missed a significant piece as of late. Shortstop Trea Turner has done his best to fill the hole left from losing Soto. Turner is slashing .286/.337/.558 with six home runs and 10 RBIs.

Toronto Blue Jays Preview

The Blue Jays have been good, but the young players on the roster have shown their age multiple times. Nevertheless, when Toronto figures out how to play together, this team could contend for multiple championships.

On Tuesday, we saw how exceptional the Blue Jays are in all phases of the game. Guerreroled the offensive surge by going 3-for-4 with seven RBIs and three bombs. Second baseman Cavan Biggio was also tremendous, going 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

Shortstop Bo Bichette, the final young star of the trio, is continuing to struggle after getting hot in the middle of April. However, the Blue Jays looked amazing on Tuesday with their complementary lineup.

Toronto has won four of its last five, so it will be interesting to see if its can keep the momentum going on Wednesday. This current run is the best one the Blue Jays have experienced all season.

The Matchup

Toronto has the advantage in this matchup because of their momentum on offense. Runs have been few and far between for the Nationals, making it tough to beat a team like Toronto.

Fedde will throw for the Nationals on Tuesday. He has struggled in four starts, giving up 16 hits and 10 earned runs for a 5.51 ERA in 16 innings.

Matz has been fantastic for Toronto. The southpaw is 4-0 with a 2.31 ERA and has racked up 25 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched. The combination of Matz and the dominant offense make Toronto a heavy favorite in my mind.

I like the Blue Jays on the moneyline and to cover the run line. However, I think the game is going to stay under on Tuesday. Get the latest MLB news in our online sportsbook.
