Allgaier in Hot Form
Justin Allgaier scored his third victory of the 2022 NASCAR Xfinity Series last week and will chase his fourth this weekend at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pennsylvania. As the NASCAR odds for this weekend show, Allgaier should do more than fine on Pocono, but is he the best bet we can take?
Can Allgaier Live Up to the Expectations?
Allgaier is the current hottest driver in the Xfinity Series. He has placed seventh or better in eight of his last nine starts and has secured three W over the stretch at Dover, Nashville, and New Hampshire.
Given his form, it’s tough not to look at Allgaier as one of the most appealing picks for anyone who is betting online on the Xfinity Series, but you have to ask yourself whether he is a good bet at the offered odds.
Perhaps he is if we consider his form and past results here.
He is indeed in good form, but Allgaier also has decent results at Pocono with two podiums (3rd in 2021, 2nd in 2017), a sixth-place finish in 2020, and an 11th-place finish in 2019. Moreover, Allgaier has led at least nine laps in each of those races.
It’s hard to hold it against anyone who wants to bet on Allgaier, but perhaps there are other drivers we mustn’t overlook.
Gibbs and Custer Can Compete
Ty Gibbs was probably one of the most inconsistent drivers early into the season, but he has looked much better of late. The 19-year-old has placed seventh or better in four of his last six races, and if he can keep at it, it’s only a matter of time before we see him in the victory lane.
Given his sudden burst of form, it makes sense for online sports betting sites to price him as one of the favorites to win the 2022 Explore the Pocono Mountains 225, and we don’t have a problem with that.
Admittedly, Gibbs has back-to-back finishes outside of the top-20, but it’s worth noting that he has led laps in both Atlanta and New Hampshire, crashing and suffering a mechanical issue, respectively.
Last year, Gibbs drove well at Pocono, placing second despite starting form 14th. He also led 11 laps and had an average running position of 7.0 — which was the second-highest on the day. His average driver rating was also pretty high (118.0) – the third highest of the race.
Another driver worth keeping an eye on is Cole Custer, who returns to the Xfinity Series for the fourth time of the season. He kicked off the year with a solid victory at Auto Club and added a 3rd-place finish at COTA. Arguably, he would have secured another solid placement at Road America, but he suffered a late crash.
Custer last raced at Pocono in 2019, when he lost the lead on the final restart but clawed his way back to claim a W for Ford. Moreover. He has placed seventh or better in his three Pocono Xfinity starts, so we can safely say that Custer knows his way around the track.

2022 Explore the Pocono Mountains 225 Prediction
Allgaier might be the most obvious choice to win the 2022 Explore the Pocono Mountains 225, but we don’t feel like his chances of winning are that much greater than Custer’s or Gibbs’.
So if you want to bet on Allgaier, perhaps it would be better to pick him on the top-three betting markets at even money or better.
So rather than betting on Allgaier, we will side with Cole Custer at +600. He has emerged as a strong contender in his three Xfinity starts and has solid numbers at Pocono. Although you might argue that Allgauer is a better driver, Custer seems a bit underrated at +600.
