In 0-2 Hole, Desperate Hurricanes Smart NHL Bet at Home vs Rangers

Six of the Last Seven Meetings Decided by One Goal

Carolina had chances to steal one of the first two games in Madison Square Garden but four power-play goals by the New York Rangers, including Vincent Trocheck’s overtime winner in Game 2, puts the Hurricanes in must-win territory as the series moves to Carolina for Game 3. The NHL odds have the Hurricanes favored to win Game 3.

The road team won two of the three games during the regular season. Dating back to last season, six of the last seven games between the Rangers and the Hurricanes have been decided by one goal.

The Las Vegas odds have the Carolina Hurricanes at -170 to win Game 3 with the potential of another one-goal game looming with +155 odds for the Hurricanes to cover at -1½ on the puck line. The Rangers are priced at +147 to win Game 3 outright and improve to 7-0 in this year’s playoffs.

The odds have gone from +140 to -290 for the Rangers to eliminate the Hurricanes since the series began.

According to the NHL playoff odds, the Rangers (+400) have the best odds to win the Stanley Cup. The championship odds for the Hurricanes have gone from +400 to +900 since the start of the series.

Rangers vs Hurricanes Odds and Spreads

Rangers Feeling the Power

While it could be argued that some Broadway plays didn’t have a performance like Vincent Trocheck’s sell job of a push by former Rangers defenseman Brady Skjei that led to a penalty being called and the game-winning goal being scored by Trocheck in overtime, as long as the perceived embellishments by the Rangers result in penalties, the Hurricanes have reasons to be concerned.

The Hurricanes led the NHL by killing off 86.4% of the opposing power plays during the regular season. However, that number has fallen to 65% in the first seven playoff games. The Rangers have scored four times on nine man-advantage opportunities in the playoffs.

Carolina actually had one more power play in the first two games of the series.

A major difference is that Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin has stopped all 10 shots when Carolina is on the power play while four of the 10 shots on goal by the Rangers on the power play have eluded Carolina goalie Frederik Andersen.

Now or Never for the Hurricanes

While the only comparison between the Rangers and the Islanders happen to be that they both play their home games in New York, the Hurricanes are hoping that the results on home ice will be similar to what happened in the series against the Islanders

In three home games in the playoffs, the Hurricanes have averaged 4.7 goals and 34.3 shots on goal. The Hurricanes are putting up just 2.75 goals on the road.

Carolina is 8-1 outright and 6-3 against the puck line in its last nine games as the home favorite. The Rangers are 4-4-1 in their last nine games as the road underdog. However, they have covered in each of the last seven contests as the road underdog.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online:

  • Carolina is 53-29-9 as a favorite.
  • The Rangers are 11-6-2 when listed as the underdog.
  • New York has covered in 24 of 43 road games with 23 of those games landing over the total.
  • Just 18 of 44 games on home ice for Carolina went over the total.
  • The total has gone over in four of New York’s last five games.
  • Fifteen of the Rangers’ last 20 games against Eastern Conference teams went over the total.
  • Four of Carolina’s last six games went over the total.

Desperation Time in Game 3 for Hurricanes

The Rangers go after their ninth win in a row and look to improve to 5-1 in their last six games in Carolina.

The Hurricanes have won five home games in a row.

Carolina continues to play without defenseman Brett Pesce and forward Jesper Fast.

The Hurricanes outscored the Rangers 6-4 at even strength and will look to keep the game at 5-on-5 because the Rangers’ power play looks hard to stop right now.
