Bet Golden Knights to Extend Series vs Stars in Game 6

The Vegas Long-Term Injured Reserve – oops, we mean the Golden Knights – had 11 shots get through to goalie Jake Oettinger as they tried to avoid falling behind in the series with the Dallas Stars for the first time in Wednesday’s Game 5. However, a second-period goal by Jason Robertson stood up as Dallas sent the series back to Vegas with a chance to close out the reigning Stanley Cup champions. The NHL odds have Dallas as the slight favorite heading into Game 6.

When Vegas won the first two games of the series in Dallas, the Golden Knights pushed their winning streak against the Stars to six games. Dallas responded by winning the last three games.

The Stars are priced at -115 by the NHL betting line to wrap things up in Game 6. Dallas is priced at +230 to cover at -1½ on the puck line. Vegas is at -105 to win outright. Will the game go off as a Pick’em?

When looking at NHL playoff odds, the series odds for the Stars were at +130 after the Game 1 loss but are now at -425 compared to +325 for the Golden Knights.

Brave New World for the Golden Knights

Vegas did not face elimination in any of its four playoff series a season ago as the Golden Knights ousted Winnipeg in five games, won in six games against both the Dallas Stars and Edmonton Oilers, and captured the Stanley Cup in five games versus the Florida Panthers.

Oettinger stopped 64 of 68 shots in the first two games at T-Mobile Arena and he came up huge again in Game 5.

Vegas lost both games on home ice so it is now or never as the Golden Knights need to win Game 6 to send the series back to Dallas for the decisive Game 7.

This is a veteran group that finished the regular season tied with the second-most home wins among Western Conference teams.

Dallas already won one game in this series as a road favorite. That ended a run of four wins in a row and eight of the last 10 when the Golden Knights won outright at the underdog on home ice.

Good to the Last Shift

How close has this series been? In the first five contests, the game has been tied or either the Dallas or Golden Knights have led by one goal for 87% of the more than 316 minutes played.

This could be more of the same.

There isn’t much of a reward to take the Golden Knights at -270 to cover at +1.5 on the puck line, and with the way this series has played out, it is rather risky to go with Dallas to win by more than one goal.

The Golden Knights are 4-2 outright but just 2-4 against the puck line this season as the home underdog. Dallas has won 14 of its last 16 games as a road favorite and has covered in nine of those matchups.

Here are some numbers to consider for those who bet online as the Stars look to close out the Stanley Cup champions on the road.

  • Twelve of the last 18 games between the Stars and Golden Knights finished under the total.
  • Dallas is 51-24-7 as a favorite this season.
  • The Golden Knights are 15-15-5 as the underdog.
  • The Stars have seen 23 of 43 road games land over the total.
  • The total has gone under in 11 of the last 14 games for the Stars.
  • Dallas has won 10 of its last 11 road games.
  • The total has gone under in five of the last seven games for the Golden Knights.

Stars vs Golden Knights Injury Update

Forwards Radek Faksa and Mason Marchment are questionable for the Stars while defenseman Jani Hakanpaa is out.

Defenseman Nicolas Hague is questionable for Vegas.

What to Look for

Dallas finished strong in the regular season to win the Central Division title and earn home-ice advantage in the Western Conference playoffs. The Stars would prefer not to have to win another game at home to set up a matchup with division rival Colorado.

Vegas has pretty much the same group of skaters that won the Stanley Cup and added forward Tomas Hertl and defenseman Noah Hanifin to try to make it two titles in a row. The atmosphere should be intense with the home crowd ready to help Vegas send the series to a Game 7.

It is hard to count out a team full of players who know how to win at this time of the year. Although Dallas has the clear edge in goal with Oettinger, it is still hard to pick against the Golden Knights in this matchup. Going with the game to finish under 5½ is another option worth considering.
