Texas Surges Ahead

The Longhorns’ 69-66 win over Kansas State gave them their fourth straight win in Big 12 play, but Texas needed a comeback to get it.

The Wildcats had a strong lead against Texas for much of the first half, building it to 14 at one point before it settled for an 11-point lead at halftime. Texas struggled to shoot in the first half, finishing with a 30.4% field-goal percentage while going 1 of 11 beyond the arc.

However, the Longhorns turned it around in the second, led by Christian Bishop and Sir’Jabari Rice. Bishop scored all 14 of his points in the second half and Rice also added 14, both team highs. Rice also added 10 rebounds to his stat sheet.

The Longhorns, who lead the Big 12 in scoring and field goal percentage averaging 79.4 points on 48% shooting, had four players record double figures and shot 57.1% in the second half to aid the comeback.

Texas’ defense was also strong, holding the Wildcats’ top two scorers, Keyontae Johnson and Markquis Nowell, both under 20 points, with the duo combining for 26.

The Longhorns’ combined offensive and defensive strength helped them pull off the comeback against the Wildcats, and they’ll need another strong showing against a hungry Kansas team.

Kansas Seeks Rebound

The Jayhawks are coming off their third Big 12 loss in four games, falling to Iowa State 68-53 on the road.

Kansas’ offensive showing was one of its worst in the Bill Self era, as it was held to its lowest point total in Big 12 play under Self.

The Jayhawks, who average 75.6 points for sixth in the Big 12, struggled to find any offense outside of leading scorer Jalen Wilson, who accounted for half of Kansas’ points. Wilson finished with 26 points while everyone else finished in single digits.

Kansas didn’t shoot very well, finishing 38.6% from the field and 26.1% from 3. The Jayhawks ended up having more turnovers than field goals, as Iowa State turned them over 20 times compared to their 17 made field goals.

The Jayhawks’ 29.7% turnover rate was a season worst, and they’ll need to better protect the ball against a Texas team that is third in the Big 12 in forced turnovers, turning teams over 16.1 times a game.
