The No. 20 San Diego State Aztecs look to clinch an NCAA Tournament berth when they take on the Utah State Aggies in the championship game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament on Saturday.
San Diego State has won its last three contests and was the conference’s regular-season champion by two games over the Aggies and Boise State. Utah State has been hot, winning seven straight, though it has yet to beat the Aztecs this season. Utah State Looks For Second Straight Upset
The Utah State Aggies tied for second place in the regular-season standings in the Mountain West Conference, but they were the third seed in the conference tournament, meaning their win over Boise State in Friday’s semifinals was technically an upset. San Diego State in Familiar Spot
The San Diego State Aztecs are making their sixth straight appearance in the title game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament, but they’ve gone just 2-3 in the previous five appearances. Utah State has two of those victories over the Aztecs for the title, so the Aztecs know that they have to be at their best to advance to the NCAA Tournament with a win.
“March is for players,” San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher said about playing in the MWC Tournament. “We’ve done enough coaching during the year. We know who we are. We know what we should be doing. Then a player or two is going to make a play in March that either advances you or sends you home.”
Senior forward Keshad Johnson made the plays in Friday’s win, scoring 15 points, grabbing four rebounds and blocking two shots against San Jose State. Johnson is averaging 7.8 points and 5.2 rebounds on the season.
Senior guard Matt Bradley is the top scorer for Dutcher, averaging 12.8 points per game. Bradley had just eight points in Friday’s win, shooting 3-of-10 from the floor, so he’ll be looking for a better performance in the tournament championship game.
