Brest: Nothing to Play For

Having failed to win any of their11 league fixtures this campaign, Brest could not have envisaged a situation where they would be out of relegation trouble at this stage, however, a six-match winning streak saw them climb the ladder, and a recent nine-point burst from three consecutive fixtures has ultimately pushed them over the line.

Brest made it three wins in a row last weekend when they beat relegation-threatened 2-0 on home soil. That followed an impressive 2-1 victory over Lyon which saw their two-game winless streak come to an end and a short 1-0 victory against bottom-placed Metz.

Although their pre-season objective has already been achieved, they currently have enough momentum to challenge for a 10th or ninth-place finish, the current gap to the former being three points. Both Lille and Nantes are very inconsistent so if Brest will extend their winning run they will add even more pressure on the two sides.

While Brest is in a position where they can play with freedom having nothing to lose, the same cannot be said about their opponents who are fighting for the European spots. The trio of Sebastien Cibois, Franck Honorat, and Jeremy Le Douaron are not in a position to return from their respective injuries. It’s risky to bet on the winner of this contest so we won’t include Brest in our soccer picks and parlays. Instead, we will focus on the goals market.

Strasbourg: Fighting for Top-Six Finish

Strasbourg has enjoyed an amazing season by their standards, and could yet qualify for Europe, for the first time since 2020 when they won the French Cup which gave them access to the Europa League. They are sitting sixth in the standings being leapfrogged by Nice after dropping five points in their previous two games. Last weekend they did well to keep champions Paris Saint-Germain to an entertaining 3-3 draw coming back from two goals down, scoring the equalizer in the injury time.

Their biggest weapon is their attacking line as they have the fourth attack in the league after PSG, Rennes, and Lyon with 58 goals scored in 35 games. They have a tough schedule until the end of the season playing in-form Brest, second-placed Marseille on the road, and Clermont on home soil. They are trailing fifth-placed Nice by three points and fourth-placed AS Monaco by five points – we don’t expect them to leapfrog them in the remaining three rounds. If they are to finish in a European spot, it will be one of the most amazing stories in recent seasons.

Strasbourg has finished 15th, 11th, 10thand 15th in the France Ligue 1 since earning promotion back, so this season they have punched above their weight. Their experience at this level is limited and that’s why they don’t know how to play these types of must-win games.

Strasbourg will again be missing Dimitri Lienard, Jean-Eudes Aholou, Nordine Kandil, Marvin Elimbi, Abdul Majeed Waris, and Ismael Doukoure on Saturday. The visitors did not pick up any fresh injuries against PSG last weekend, though, so we expect them to use the same starting XI to take to the field for this contest. If you’re soccer betting you should know that Strasbourg is not more than a nice story that is about to end with this match.

Brest vs Strasbourg Head-to-Head

The visitors have a decent record in the mutual encounters with Brest. They won two of their last four including a 3-1 victory in the reverse fixture, losing one in the process. We’ve seen at least three goals in each of the last four head-to-heads between the two sides and at least four on four occasions.

Strasbourg has been excellent at home in France’s top flight this term, collecting 35 points from their 18 matches, with only PSG, Rennes and AS Monaco boasting superior records at this stage but they haven’t been that solid on the road winning just five in 17 away games.

Brest vs Strasbourg Predictions

Despite playing on the road, the visitors enter this clash as heavy favorites being priced at -130 on the three-way moneyline according to the latest soccer odds while the goal line is set at 2½.

There’s no way we will back Strasbourg at this price despite the fact that they are the only side fighting for something. They enjoyed a great season but we don’t expect them to finish in the European spots. Given their scoring ability, they should be able to score at least twice on their own so we will sprinkle a small stake on Strasbourg to score over 1½ goals at -125. Brest is a tough nut to crack. On top of that, they won three games in a row including a huge upset against Lyon.

The hosts should be able to cover the spread so if you love that specific market we recommend you take them with +½ at +100. For our official pick, we are going with the overs as we consider the total line to be set too low.
