Mainz vs FC Union Berlin Predictions, Preview, Stream, Odds & Picks

Rising Bundesliga Teams

Mainz has been a consistent member of the top German league, the Bundesliga, for just over the last 10 years. Recently they have been struggling, ending up near the bottom half of the table until last season when they finished eighth. FC Union Berlin was promoted to the Bundesliga in 2019 and has had a meteoric rise, finishing fifth last season.

Statistically, both teams scored the same amount of goals and were only one off in goals allowed, but 11 points separated Union Berlin from Mainz.

Let’s check the latest Bundesliga news, stats, injury reports and Bundesliga odds for Mainz vs FC Union Berlin. We’ve plenty of Bundesliga picks and predictions for you to consider.

Mainz Hoping for European Play

Last season, Mainz made a massive jump in the Bundesliga table, and they will try to capitalize on that success this season. In the 2020-21 season, Mainz finished 12th, six points above a relegation qualification game. Last season, they jumped four spots to eighth, finishing eight points from European soccer. Moving one spot up would secure that this season.

Mainz’s defense last season was a big reason for the team’s success. They allowed 45 total goals, the third-fewest in the league. The team’s success did come at a cost, as starting center-back Moussa Niakhate was sold during the summer transfer window. However, they did buy a new young starting center-back in Maxim Leitsch. Purchasing attacking midfielder Angelo Fulgini was the other significant acquisition for Mainz.

In Mainz’s first game of the season, they won 2-1 against Bochum behind two goals from Karim Onisiwo. Onisiwo was a standout from last season with five goals and eight assists. With the previous season’s leading goal scorer, Jonathan Burkardt, out with an injury, most of the scoring opportunities will need to come from Onisiwo.

FC Union Berlin’s Upward Climb

After being promoted in 2019, Union Berlin has quickly established itself as a quality Bundesliga team. They easily avoided relegation in their first season, clearing it by 10 points, then finished seventh the following season and fifth last season to secure a spot in European soccer.

Last season, Union Berlin did play in the first Europa Conference League, the lowest tier of European competition. They are in the Europa League this season, a step up. With a much more difficult season ahead, the team has looked to improve its roster through loans rather than buying players outright. However, last season’s leading goal scorer, Taiwo Awoniyi, was sold for a $23 million transfer fee. Union Berlin bought his replacement, Jordan Pefok, for just $8.8 million.

Union Berlin’s strong defense had a massive impact on the team’s success and is being counted upon to carry them to another solid season. They allowed the second-fewest total goals in the league with 44 last season. They averaged 1.3 goals per game while scoring 1.5, which shows the tightrope Union Berlin was on last season. They won their opener 3-1, which could hint at their improved attack.

Mainz vs FC Union Berlin Head-to-Head

With Union Berlin getting into the top tier of the Bundesliga in 2019, they have faced Mainz six times. However, despite being a new team to Germany’s top league, Union Berlin has won four games between the two while Mainz has only won once. Mainz’s one victory came in 2021, while Union Berlin won both matchups last season on an aggregate score of 5-2.

Mainz vs FC Union Berlin Prediction

Last season, Mainz and Union Berlin had nearly identical goal differential, scoring 50 goals, but Union Berlin only allowed 44 goals to Mainz’s 45. However, this season might change based on Union Berlin’s upward trajectory over the last three seasons within the Bundesliga. The team is a lot better due to their preparation for European tournaments while Mainz has stayed relatively the same. Union Berlin and Mainz had two of the best defenses last season, and that will likely continue this season, leading to a low-scoring game. Both teams came off the first-game win, but Union Berlin was dominant throughout.

Score Prediction: FC Union Berlin 1, Mainz 0
