Search for Portugal’s identity

Former European champions and Nations League premiere winners Portugal struggled mightily, but still managed to score the equalizer against Spain in a 1-1 draw on the road. Cristiano Ronaldo was only given a brief cameo off the bench, while Fernando Santos defended his decision to start Andre Silva instead. The Selecao did not pick up any new injuries, however, but Vitinha tested positive for covid before the game. Domingos Duarte and Diogo Jota were both left out of the squad.

Portugal are fully-packed with ‘piano players’ in their squad, with the ability to change the game by carrying the team on their backs. There’s an amazing ball technique, greater range of vision, seeming to think much faster and problem-solve with greater speed than everyone else on the field. Teams only have one of these players…a few more if they’re fortunate.

The problem is that Portugal have too many of them, and they’re stepping on each other’s toes trying to impose their own games. They need balance, with the piano carriers that allow the main star to perform in the spotlight. Since the stronger and more diverse your piano carriers tend to be the better your team.

It will be a very long summer for many players on the roster. Portugal play three additional Nations League matches this month before their break resumes. For international head coaches, there are effectively just 31 days left to drill their teams before the World Cup. This current international break in June is crucial for coaches looking to try new options or work in new players on the squad.

Ronaldo will expect to return to his starting spot Sunday. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes’s spots are likely safe, but Jota’s return after his Champions League final exploits could see him join Ronaldo and Rafael Leao in the final third. Expect a squad rotation Sunday, but we’ll still include Portugal in our soccer picks and parlays.

A poor Swiss start

The Czech Republic beat Switzerland, 2-1, at the start of Nations League Group A2. An own goal sealed the Swiss defeat and, in a group with Portugal and Spain, Switzerland aren’t making life easy on themselves. They are now big favorites to be relegated to the second tier. They must have an unexpected result on the road against Portugal to sustain their Group A spot hopes. Switzerland did make it to the semifinals of Euro 2020, before losing on penalties (Spain). They secured automatic entrance to the World Cup after a strong qualifying run.

Benfica’s Haris Seferovic, Wolfsburg’s Kevin Mbabu and captain Xherdan Shaqiri were all benched against the Czech Republic, but we’re expecting them to start against Portugal. Switzerland missed many clear-cut opportunities, recording 13 first-match goal attempts and seven shots on target. They also had the possession. It was a long season for all the players, and you saw that on the pitch. Many of them are affected by this international break, because they should normally be on vacation right now. So, tired legs and lack of focus will be the main problems for the Swiss against Portugal. If you’re betting online, make sure to fade them.

Portugal vs Switzerland Head-to-Head

Portugal lost just once in seven previous home fixtures in this competition, winning five of the last six fixtures in their homeland. Switzerland did score in 11 of their last 13 matches across all competitions, and their knack for impacting the scoresheet could allow them to find the back of the net in Lisbon. Though, five clean sheets in Portugal’s previous eight games across all competitions. Also, Portugal scored at least twice in seven of their last eight home games, while the Swiss allowed two goals in each of their previous two fixtures.

Portugal vs Switzerland Predictions

The hosts enter this clash as favorites, priced at -140 on the three-way moneyline, according to the latest soccer odds The goal line is set at 2½.

Portugal did earn a well-deserved point in a 1-1 draw Thursday at rival Spain, and now back on home soil, they will expect to record a first Nations League victory at Switzerland’s expense. Switzerland are hoping to avoid a second defeat, but don’t expect them to return home with points. Big problems at the back and never having a defensive approach. Do not expect them to play for the draw. Portugal is going to expose their defensive issues.

With so much at their disposal, Portugal is taken to score twice Sunday, en route to a comfortable win in this clash. We’re also backing a high-scoring affair, at least three goals on the scoresheet.

Pick: Portugal Over 1½ goals (Ev)
