Denver Trying To Right Its Ship

The Denver Nuggets are having a little trouble with consistency as we head towards the postseason, with the team’s longest winning streak over the last 10 games being two games. They can match that with a win in Charlotte, though it’s going to take another superlative effort from reigning NBA MVP Nikola Jokic.

The All-Star center is one of the top contenders for this season’s award as well, ranking in the league’s top 10 in scoring (10th at 26.3 points), rebounding (second at 13.5) and assists (eighth at 7.9). But it’s his ability to get his teammates involved that makes Denver the best team it can be.

One of those teammates lately has been rookie guard Bones Hyland, who is averaging 15.7 points over his last 10 games. Hyland is averaging 9.8 points on the season but has seen his opportunities go up of late. Hyland had just nine points in Saturday’s win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, though he did have six assists in the victory.

Forward Will Barton is often overlooked when talking about the Nuggets, but the veteran is second on the team in scoring at 14.6 points per game. Barton finished with 18 points, six rebounds, seven assists, one block and two steals against the Thunder on Saturday, showing his overall impact on the Nuggets.

Hornets Look To Take It To Another Opponent

The Charlotte Hornets like to push the ball and push an opponent to cover all of their offensive options. Charlotte has multiple players that can take over offensively, and when everyone is getting involved, Charlotte can be a hard team to beat.

“The strength of our team has been our depth all year,” Hornets coach James Borrego said after Sunday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets. “The depth of our roster, the versatility … it’s a problem for many teams right now, that we can play different lineups.”

The best of those lineups usually include All-Star guard LaMelo Ball, who is coming off 33 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in the win over the Nets. Ball is averaging 20.0 points, 6.8 rebounds and 7.3 assists this season, and he’s able to either look for his own shot or set up his teammates, making it hard for opponents to guard him.

Forward Miles Bridges is slightly ahead of Ball for the team scoring lead at 20.1 points per game. He’s also contributing 7.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest and can be one of the better finishers in the league on the fast break.

When guard Terry Rozier gets going from 3-point range, he can be very hard to stop. The veteran is averaging 19.6 points and hitting 38.3% from 3-point range this season. He’s been heating up lately, hitting 43.0% from beyond the arc over the last 10 games.

The Charlotte Hornets are looking for the season sweep of the Denver Nuggets with a victory in this one. Charlotte won the earlier meeting this season by eight on Dec. 23.

That win snapped a five-game Nuggets winning streak in the series, as Denver had swept the Hornets in each of the last two seasons. Denver has been very good on the road this season, which may explain why the NBA lines are favoring it on Monday night.
