The club appointed Domenico Tedesco as their new manager, four days after the departure of the American coach. The real issue with Marsch and Leipzig is really as simple as the right manager, wrong time. Anyone replacing a manager as talented as Julian Nagelsmann is going to struggle.
Back in December, Leipzig had scored just one win in their last six games, and the squad’s discontent with the American’s radical tactical shift seemed to foreshadow the downfall long before it eventually happened. Domenico Tedesco came as a savior having as the main objective to finish in the top four and earn a Champions League spot. He has brought them up to fourth in the table, taking them into the semi-finals of the DFB Pokal and the quarter-finals of the Europa League.
Tedesco’s first decision after taking the job was to steer away from a 4-2-3-1 and back to the 3-4-1-2. That worked like a glove with Leipzig being one of the most in-form teams in the domestic league. Tedesco has reverted Leipzig’s system back to a trigger-based approach, similar to what Nagelsmann was using.
