The St. Louis Cardinals will continue their eight-game road trip against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. After playing five straight games with the Chicago Cubs, the Cards will now move onto an interleague matchup.
The Rays are favored on the MLB betting odds but if you’re going to bet online, keep in mind that they’ve lost two in a row and are in a mini-funk. They are 18-13 at home.
With the pitching matchups out, we take a closer look at this showdown.
Hudson to Start for Cardinals
Enough with the Cubs-Cardinals matchups, right? The two teams engaged in an unusually long five-game series, which came to a conclusion on Sunday Night Baseball.
St. Louis will send Dakota Hudson to the mound and the 27-year-old has delivered mixed results. The team won three of his first four starts, lost three of his next four and have since won two in a row.
Much of it has to do with run support — St. Louis has scored 5.3 runs per game in the wins and just 3.75 in the losses.
Hudson has allowed one earned run or less in three last four outings. He puts a lot of balls in play, though, so it’s unclear if he can keep this up. He has only 14 strikeouts in 51.2 innings with nine walks.
He is just 1-2 with a 4.68 ERA on the road. Opponents bat .270 against him in away games compared to .206 at home, so consider that split stat as it could be a big factor on Tuesday night.
Rays Treading Water of Late
The Tampa Bay Rays’ record of 31-23 looks impressive, but at a closer look, this team has mostly been treading water of late. After starting 18-10, the team is just 13-13 in their last 26 contests. On top of that, they’re coming in on a two-game losing streak.
The MLB lines show the Rays are favored here as they’ll send Jeffrey Springs to the mound. He has been a very effective pitcher, staring off as a reliever and shifting into starts recently.
Springs is 2-2 with a 1.88 ERA and a 0.86 WHIP. Batters have had a really tough time tracking his stuff as he has 40 strikeouts and just eight walks in his 38.1 innings.
The main challenge with Springs is he hasn’t lasted that long in his starts. The team hasn’t let him throw more than 85 pitches in an outing, so it’s hard to bank on him lasting long in this one.
Cardinals vs Rays Head-to-Head
These two teams have yet to meet this season. That’s no surprise, especially since this is an interleague matchup.

Cardinals vs Rays Prediction
This has the makings of a tight contest but it’s hard to trust the Cardinals in this spot. They’ll have a day off in the midst of their road trip, so fatigue shouldn’t be a factor, but the pitching matchup favors Tampa Bay.
Taking a look at Hudson’s splits, it’s clear that he simply isn’t as effective on the road as he is at home. On top of that, it looks like Springs is a starter on the rise. That being the case, bet on the Rays to pick up the win and end their two-game losing streak.
