The Arizona Diamondbacks try to avoid a fourth consecutive loss when they face the host Kansas City Royals in the first of a brief two-game series Tuesday night. Arizona was swept at home by the St. Louis Cardinals, residing in fourth place in the NL West, some five games behind the third-place San Francisco Giants. Kansas City snapped its two-game losing skid with a win over the Chicago White Sox Monday night. It’s s in fourth place in the AL Central standings, leading the last-place Detroit Tigers by 2½ games.

Diamondbacks’ Struggling Hurlers
The Arizona Diamondbacks entered a three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals this past Friday off a shutout over the San Francisco Giants. However, in the next three games, Arizona surrendered 27 runs as St. Louis swept.
Righthander Zach Davies tries to turn things around for the Diamondbacks Tuesday night. Davies is 2-4 with a 3.99 ERA in 19 starts, striking out 74 and walking 34 in 97 innings. Davies turned in a very solid effort last start. Against the Giants last Wednesday, going five innings (one run, five hits, striking out six and two walks).
Outfielder Jake McCarthy was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a pair of walks in the loss Sunday. McCarthy is batting .276 with 12 doubles, a triple, four home runs, 22 RBIs and 32 runs scored in 64 games this season.
First baseman Christian Walker is seventh in baseball with 29 home runs. He hasn’t hit one since a three-game homer streak early last week. He’s batting .220 with 17 doubles, a triple, 70 RBIs and 60 runs scored.
Royals and Youth
The Kansas City Royals are in a familiar spot of giving young players a chance late in the season,. One of those, Drew Waters, made an impact in his major league debut Monday night. The 23-year-old outfielder was 0-for-3, but drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth inning to drive in the go-ahead run against the Chicago White Sox in a 6-4 win by the Royals.
“It’s a big deal just getting here and then being able to contribute like that,” manager Mike Matheny said of Waters after Monday’s win. “He did a great job. He showed a lot of poise on some pretty close pitches.”
One of the veterans for Kansas City, catcher Salvador Perez, has been productive, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Monday’s win. The 32-year-old is batting .225 with 16 doubles, a triple, 17 home runs, 55 RBIs and 35 runs scored in 82 games.
Righty Jonathan Heasley starts in Tuesday’s contest. Heasley is 1-7 with a 5.61 ERA in 13 starts, striking out 46 in 61 innings. Heasley will make his first start since Aug. 9, when he went 5⅓ innings against the Chicago White Sox. Heasley surrendered two runs on seven hits-including two homers-striking out five and walking one.
Diamondbacks vs Royals Head-To-Head
The Arizona Diamondbacks have a 2-0 lead in the season series against the Kansas City Royals as they try to take a season series against their interleague rival for the first time since 2012. This is the first season the teams have played since 2017, when Kansas City was 2-1 at Kauffman Stadium.
