Maybe He’s Just Feeling Left Out?
I don’t see the excellence that I saw in the past… – Tom Brady
Tom Brady is not a fan of NFL games right now. Though he’s only been away from the league for a short time now, he’s already frustrated with what he’s seeing from teams. He went off on the level of football being played right now.
“I think there’s a lot of mediocrity in today’s NFL,” Brady said on The Stephen A. Smith Show. “I don’t see the excellence that I saw in the past.”
It has been a very sloppy season and even the NFL’s top teams don’t look particularly great. But why is the quality of play down? Brady believes he knows why.
“I don’t think the coaching is as good as it was,” he said. “I don’t think the development of the young players is as good as it was. The rules have allowed a lot of bad habits to get into the actual performance of the game. I just think the product, in my opinion, is less than what it’s been.”

It’s interesting because the NFL has all these rules to protect players on offense but we’re still seeing so many high-profile injuries. NFL news has been rough lately with Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow, Anthony Richardson, Kirk Cousins and so many high-level players suffering season-ending injuries.
While I think the NFL is still great TV, I understand where Brady’s coming from. A lot of the play has just been bad this season. It seems like every team is either great on offense or great on defense or terrible at both. There are no teams that are great on both sides of the ball right now.
So many teams seem to just go all-out on one side of the ball. The San Francisco 49ers are probably the closest team to looking great on offense and defense but even they’ve struggled and recently had a three-game losing streak.
It is notable that Brady specifically called out bad coaching. NFL rumors haven’t revealed who he could be talking about but there are some bad coaches right now. Just look at teams like the Chicago Bears or the Los Angeles Chargers. Their coaches look completely in over their heads.
Brady should be joining the Raiders ownership soon, which is another team that has played a lot of bad football over the years. Maybe once he gets back into the NFL in that capacity, he could have some influence on the level of football being played.
