Boston Celtics Stats, Odds, Standings and Schedule for 2023-24 NBA Season

Boston Celtics Last Season Performance

After entering the 2022-23 season as the defending Eastern Conference champions, the Boston Celtics started out the season with some drama as head coach Ime Udoka was suspended for violating the team’s code of conduct. Assistant coach Joe Mazzulla took over as the interim head coach prior to the start of the season and was named permanent head coach midway into the season.

Despite the offseason drama, Boston got out to a hot start last season, winning 42 of its first 59 games – part of the reason for Mazzulla being given the permanent position. The Celtics finished the season with a 57-25 record, improving upon their record from the previous season, and entered the playoffs as the No. 2 seed in the East.

NBA predictions had the Celtics as one of the favorites to win the NBA championship, but it took them six and seven games to win their first two series over Atlanta and Philadelphia, respectively. Boston met Miami in the Eastern Conference finals, where it fell behind 3-0 in the series before battling back to force a Game 7, which the Heat won to advance to the NBA Finals.

Boston Celtics Key Additions

The Celtics have done more in the offseason by way of trading players, but they also got some returns for those trades. Boston’s biggest acquisitions in the offseason came by way of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, both of whom were part of trades.

Holiday spent the past three seasons with Milwaukee, playing an integral role in its championship title run in 2020-21 as well. He is one of the league’s best two-way guards and should be an asset both defensively and offensively for Boston after averaging 19.3 points, 7.4 assists and 5.1 rebounds last season.

Though he has some injury history, Porzingis played 65 games last season, and his height at 7-foot-3 should be a welcome addition for the Celtics. Porzingis averaged 23.2 points on 49.8% shooting along with 8.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks. He also has the ability to hit from the outside, shooting 38.5% from three, and he should be a solid third scoring option for Boston.

Boston also signed Dalano Banton and Oshae Brissett, who averaged 4.6 and 6.1 points, respectively, last season.

Boston Celtics Key Subtractions

Boston dealt away some key players who were part of its past postseason runs, including Marcus Smart, Grant Williams, Robert Williams and Malcolm Brogdon.

Robert Williams and Brogdon were both traded to Portland in order to land Holiday. Williams spent much of last season injured, playing just 35 games, though he ended the season averaging eight points and 8.3 rebounds a game. Brogdon finished third on the team with 14.9 points a game on 48.4% shooting.

Smart was part of the three-team trade that landed Porzingis, but he was also their longest-tenured player and one of their best defenders, winning NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the 2021-22 season. Smart was a leader for Boston during his time with the team, and he averaged 11.5 points, 6.3 assists and 1.5 steals last season.

The Celtics also traded Grant Williams to Dallas for two second-round picks after four years spent in Boston. Williams was another strong defender, providing versatility as well as a solid outside shooter. He shot 39.5% from three last season while averaging 8.1 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Boston Celtics Head Coach Analysis

Mazzulla had been the assistant coach for the Celtics since 2019, and after impressing in his interim position, he was given the full-time head coaching position midway into the season.

Mazzulla was named the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month in both October and November after leading the Celtics to a league-best 18-4 record. He was one of three finalists for NBA Coach of the Year.

With now a full offseason under his belt as head coach, expectations will be even higher for Mazzulla going into the new season.

Boston Celtics Prediction for the 2023-24 Season

Although the Celtics traded one of their top veterans and best defenders in Smart, Holiday should be a strong replacement to help the 2023-24 season still be a success, with NBA lines predicting them to win around 53.5 games.

Boston has consistently been one of the best teams in the East with Brown and Tatum leading the way. It should compete for conference supremacy with Miami and Milwaukee once again this season, with NBA odds having them tied as a conference favorite once more.
