New Orleans Saints vs Green Bay Packers

Both Teams Seeking First Preseason Win

A 2021 Season Opener Rematch

the New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers will be meeting in Week 2 of the preseason in a rematch of last year’s regular-season opener in Jacksonville, Fla.

The Packers, although on the road, were the heavy favorite to win the game and instead were trounced by the Saints 38-3.

The Saints were also technically on the road after getting displaced by Hurricane Ida, and chose Jacksonville as the host city for their home opener due to the city’s inaccessibility, making it harder for Packers’ fans to travel.

Now the two will meet again for a game not as significant at Lambeau Field for the Packers’ preseason home opener.

The Packers, after three 13-win seasons in a row, have the third-best odds of winning the NFC at (+550), while the Saints, under a new head coach in Dennis Allen, are eighth with +2000 odds.

Let’s check the latest NFL news, stats, injury reports and NFL odds for Saints vs Packers. We’ve plenty of NFL picks and predictions for you to consider.

Packers: Love Gets Another Shot

Green Bay opened its preseason slate with a trip to the Bay Area on Friday, losing to the San Francisco 49ers 28-21. San Francisco got out to a solid start with Trey Lance throwing a 76-yard touchdown pass to help the 49ers go up 20-14 by halftime.

After a training camp filled with hype surrounding Packers rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs, fans and rivals alike were able to see what it was all about.

Doubs finished with three receptions for 45 yards and a touchdown while showing his ability to separate and win deep. He did, however, have a couple of drops.

Aside from Doubs, all eyes were on backup quarterback Jordan Love, who enters his third season behind Aaron Rodgers. Love was said to be improving during training camp, and people were interested to see how that transferred to a game situation.

Love played the first half, going 13 for 24 for 176 yards, throwing two touchdowns and three interceptions. He also rushed four times for 24 yards. Despite the interceptions, both Rodgers and head coach Matt LaFleur said the mistakes weren’t entirely Love’s fault, chalking them up to drops or bad routes from wide receivers.

Love will get another chance when the Packers face the Saints on Friday night, and no doubt all eyes will be on him once more.

Saints: Running Backs Split the Pot

New Orleans also fell in its first preseason game on Saturday as the Saints traveled to Houston and lost to the Texans 17-13. Andy Dalton threw a touchdown pass in his lone possession during his Saints debut, but the Texans scored a touchdown in the final minute to grab a win.

Although rookie wide receiver Chris Olave has been getting lots of training camp buzz and the Saints have Alvin Kamara, for now, New Orleans gave a high volume of its reps to its other running backs in its preseason opener.

At the top of the Saints’ running back depth chart is Kamara, who is still awaiting a possible league suspension for an offseason incident, and Mark Ingram, who is going into his 12th season. Thus, New Orleans is looking for another strong back to handle their fair share of reps.

Against Houston, running backs Dwayne Washington, Devine Ozigbo, Tony Jones Jr. and Abram Smith all rushed over five times. That’s not much for a regular game, but enough for a preseason game that will help determine who gets the RB3 spot.

Smith led the way, rushing seven times for 30 yards, while Jones also had seven carries for 27 yards. Ozigbo finished with 26 yards on eight carries while Washington had nine rushes for 19 yards. Washington also finished with three receptions for 18 yards and a touchdown.

As the Saints figure out who gets the third running back spot on the depth chart, look for these four to show up again.

Saints vs Packers Injury Report

For the Packers, kicker Mason Crosby, running back Kylin Hill and tackle David Bakhtiari are out. Safeties Darnell Savage, Innis Gaines, Dallin Leavitt and Tariq Carpenter, cornerback Donte Vaughn, center Cole Schneider, defensive tackle Akial Byers, wide receiver Christian Watson, tight end Robert Tonyan, guard Elgton Jenkins and linebacker Tipa Galeai are questionable.

Safety Smoke Monday, linebacker D’Marco Jackson and offensive tackles Jerald Hawkins and Ethan Greenidge are out for the Saints. Quarterback Jameis Winston, tight end Taysom Hill and linebackers Pete Werner and Zack Baun are questionable.

Saints vs Packers Head-to-Head

This will be the 10th time New Orleans and Green Bay have met in the preseason, with the Packers winning seven. It will also be the first time since 2015 that the Saints have traveled to Green Bay for a preseason matchup.

The Saints and the Packers have met 27 times in the regular season, with Green Bay owning a 17-10 winning record, though New Orleans dealt the Packers a crushing loss in their last meeting.

Saints vs Packers Prediction

Both teams are coming off of a loss in their first preseason game. The Packers will want to get Love more reps while the Saints will likely have quarterback Ian Book in most of the game, as they did last week.

With the game at Lambeau Field, the Packers get an extra edge. Expect it to be a close one where the Pack comes out on top in the end.
