Unbeaten Birmingham to Test Michigan's Top-Rated Defense

Stallions Look to Stay Perfect

This could be the best game of the weekend. Birmingham is the only undefeated team left in the USFL after five weeks of the 2022 season. Michigan has allowed the fewest points and fewest yards in the league.

Michigan will be looking to bounce back after a 27-20 loss to Tampa Bay the last time out. Birmingham finally displayed a killer instinct with a 13-point win over Philadelphia after the Stallions won their first four games by an average of six points.

Panthers’ Defense has Plenty of Bite

The Michigan Panthers will be looking to shake off a rare rough outing defensively. The Panthers only allowed 280 yards in a loss to Tampa Bay but did give up a pair of touchdowns through the air and two more on the ground in the seven-point loss

The defense is led by Frank Ginda and Sean Williams. Ginda is tied for fifth in the USFL with 39 tackles while Williams has 29 tackles. Williams’ status is up in the air and that could impact the USFL predictions for this contest.

The Panthers’ success on defense is being down without many splash plays. Bailey is the only Michigan player with more than one sack as the Panthers are last in the USFL with four sacks. Only Tampa Bay has fewer interceptions than the three recorded by the Panthers.

Keep an eye on Williams, who is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game.

Stallions Keep on Winning

There’s nothing particularly dynamic about what the Birmingham Stallions have accomplished through the first five games of the season, except for the noteworthy accomplishment of winning all five games.

The Stallions rank sixth out of the eight USFL teams with a passing completion mark of 54.4 percent. Their 5.9 yards per passing attempt is fifth. Birmingham doesn’t have a rushing play longer than 31 yards and it ranks in the middle of the league with an average of 4.1 yards per rush.

However, they don’t ask how, they ask how many. Birmingham has found a way to have more points than the other team at the end of the game.

The good news is that J’Mar Smith is third in the league with 784 passing yards, even though he has only started two games. Victor Bolden leads the USFL with 29 receptions.

Panthers vs Stallions Prediction

It could be argued that the Michigan Panthers are much better than their 1-4 record while the Birmingham Stallions are not as good as their 5-0 mark. Will that translate into a potential upset on Saturday night?

Michigan quarterback Shea Patterson threw for more than 300 yards the last time out and if he can get things going through the air, maybe the Panthers’ offense can give its outstanding defense some help.

Tight end Marcus Baugh and offensive lineman Sean Pollard are questionable for Michigan, as are defensive back Jalin Burrell and safety Sean Williams.

For Birmingham, tight end Sage Surratt and linebacker Scooby Wright are questionable. Defensive end Dondrea Tillman could miss the game.

Until somebody beats Birmingham, the Stallions have to be favored each time out. Those who bet online would be smart to keep rolling with the Stallions until they provide a reason to pick against them.

It is quite possible that this game goes under the 37½-point total.

Smith spread the ball around last week with three receivers having at least seven targets. That will have to continue as Birmingham faces the top defense in the USFL.

Pick: Under 37½

Pick: Stallions -6½
