Overview
The European Championship, also known as EURO or EURO Cup, is considered one of the best national team tournaments in the world. In fact, soccer analysts often compare it to the World Cup.
Unlike the Copa America, in which all teams associated with the CONMEBOL get to play in the tournament, the EURO is only played by the best 24 teams in the continent. That’s why the qualifiers are needed, because there are 55 teams associated with UEFA.
No other team has played more EURO Cup Qualifiers than Spain with 17. La Roja managed to qualify 11 times. On the other hand, no other team has more appearances in the finals than Germany with 14. In other words, those are two teams you’ll definitely want to consider for your EURO Cup Qualifiers betting ticket. Finally, 20 teams have never been able to qualify. Malta leads the way with 15 failed attempts.
How the Tournament Works
First of all, keep in mind that the EURO Cup is played every four years, meaning the qualifiers are played every two years, more or less.
The format is pretty simple. For the 2024 edition, which will be held in Germany, there are 10 groups in the EURO Cup Qualifiers. Some groups of five teams, some groups of six teams. The draw is based on the UEFA coefficient.
Each team faces the other four or five twice, one at home, one on the road. A victory means three points, while a draw means one point for each team. Losing means zero points. The winners and runners-up of each group automatically qualifies for the tournament finals. Unlike other soccer tournaments, finishing last has no repercussions.
Keep in mind that the host team gets an automatic spot, leaving only three more up for grabs. This is where the UEFA Nations League comes into play. The top three divisions of the 2022-23 UNL will form play-off brackets to determine three more finalists. As expected, any team that’s already qualified won’t participate in the brackets.
