A Bit of History
Also known as the Calcio, the Italian Serie A was founded in 1898. However, the competition began to gain popularity worldwide in 1929, when the entity in charge turned it into a round-robin tournament.
A total of 16 teams have won the title, also known as Scudetto. Juventus is on top of the list with 36, followed by Inter Milan and AC Milan with 19. Since the 2001-02 season, only Napoli prevented any of those teams from winning the title and it was in the 2022-23 campaign that, became a new favorite for all the Italy Serie A betting enthusiasts.
Many of the considered best players in history played in Serie A, including Diego Maradona, Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit, Michel Platini, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, and Cristiano Ronaldo.
No wonder it’s considered one of the top five European Leagues alongside the Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Ligue 1.
How the Championship Works
As mentioned before, we’re talking about a round-robin tournament. That means that each of the 20 teams plays the other 19 twice, once at home, once on the road. That also means that, beyond the Italy Serie A lines, all teams begin the season with chances of finishing atop the standings.
Regarding matches, the winning team gets three points, while the losing team gets zero. If the match ends with a draw, each team gets a point. At the end of the season, the team with the most points wins the title.
The crowned team automatically qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, the most prestigious club competition in the world. Second, third, and fourth place also qualify for the UCL. Fifth and sixth qualify for the UEFA Europa League, while seventh qualifies for the UEFA Conference League. As you can see, there’s a lot to play for since qualifying for a UEFA competition means a better image and good money.
On the other hand, the last three teams are relegated to Serie B.
All 20 Serie A teams also compete in the domestic cup, better known as Coppa Italia. That’s a knockout tournament in which each tie is played as a single leg, except the two-legged semifinals. The winner also qualifies for the UEL and the Italian Super Cup, which is against the Serie A champion.
Title Contenders
According to the Italy Serie A odds, and history itself, Inter Milan, AC Milan, and Juventus should always be considered title contenders. No other team has won more consecutive Serie A titles than Juventus. The Bianconeri won nine in a row between 2011 and 2020.
Reigning champion Napoli also belongs on that list. The Azzurri finished in the top three in seven of the last 10 seasons.
Every tournament has dark horses. Here’s where Atalanta, Lazio, and AS Roma come into play. All three finished last season in the top six. AS Roma deserves a special mention since the Wolves also reached the UEL final.
Summing up, make sure to tune in and wager on the Serie A, an exhilarating tournament that never ceases to amaze soccer fans all around the world.
How the Championship Works
The league has a total of twenty members. The team with the most points, or the Scudetto, wins the title in 38 games. Two games are played, one at each team’s home stadium and one away from it.
There are games every weekend during the regular season, except when international games, played during the season, are scheduled to take place. Early and late Saturday night games are standard.
Finals
During the first half of the season, called the andata, teams only play each other once. All in all, there are a total of 19 titles.
The ritorno, or return, is a second meeting between the teams in the second half of the season. There is a switch in the home and away from positions for each game.
