Big Ten Championship Packs 1-2 Wallop

Ohio State and Indiana Meet in Battle of Undefeateds

The official CFP rankings wonโ€™t be out until later Tuesday. However, there is no doubt as to who the top teams will be. There are only two undefeated teams in the regular season, and they will meet on Saturday in the Big Ten Championship Game.

In college football betting, Ohio State is No. 1 and Indiana is No. 2. Both are 12-0. It is fortunate โ€“ and unfortunate โ€“ they are playing here and not in the CFP Championship Game. The Buckeyes are +155 to win it all. The Hoosiers are +450.

The difference in futures odds would explain why Ohio State is a 5ยฝ-point favorite in the college football lines.

There are talks that the playoffs will expand to 24 teams. If it does, the best thing that could happen is eliminating these conference championship games.

They create an imbalance for teams that are successful and gain them, as opposed to others that donโ€™t risk much by staying home in the playoff rankings. Whoever loses here does not deserve to drop below No. 2 in the rankings.

The Team to Fear

Much of the attention goes to SEC and Big Ten schools and their championships. However, one school not to ignore in the CFP picture is Texas Tech.

College football odds have the Red Raiders at +1100 to win it all. Talk about a tempting proposition. Texas Tech is a 13ยฝ-point favorite to repeat its regular-season win over BYU and take the Big 12 crown.

At worst, it will be fourth in the rankings if it wins. It could move into third if Alabama beats Georgia. This is a team that has scored 518 points and allowed only 135. Its defense is competitive with Indiana and Ohio State.

The one loss was to Arizona State when its quarterback, Behren Morton, was hampered by a knee injury. Do not sleep on Texas Tech.

ACC Faces Huge Issues

The ACC is another example of how conference championship games can backfire.

If Virginia wins and improves to 11-2, the ACC should be fine in the CFP. However, if Duke reverses its regular-season loss to the Cavaliers, the conference could wind up without a team in the CFP.

If Duke wins, the ACC could be left out of the picture because the CFP awards automatic selections to the five highest-ranked conference champions and the next seven highest-ranked teams, meaning Power 4 leagues are not guaranteed a spot.

Talk about a disaster. Virginia is +40000 in NCAA football odds to win it all. BetUS doesnโ€™t have a number on Duke, which is deservedly unranked.

The SEC Quandary

The SEC is a powerhouse conference. It has four teams that are locks to make the CFP: Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, and Georgia.

However, the SEC Championship Game creates a problem. Alabama beat Georgia in the regular season. It gained a spot in the championship via a tiebreaker along with the Dawgs. NCAAF odds have Alabama at +1200 to win it all. And here is where the problem lies.

Should Georgia, which is a 2ยฝ-point favorite in college football spreads to defeat Alabama, win this game, the Crimson Tide would have three losses.

That could mean Alabama would be left out of the CFP picture. Georgia is +800 with its lone loss being to Alabama.

The Ole Miss situation will be fascinating. How will the CFP committee view the Rebels (+3000 to win it all) now that Lane Kiffin has bolted to LSU?

College Football betting lines for the first-round CFP games will be set after they are announced on Dec. 7.
