Japan NPB Betting Odds & Lines

What is Japan NPB About?

The Japan Nippon Professional Baseball is the highest level of baseball in Japan. It is often referred to as “Puro Yakyu” locally, which translates to professional baseball, while outside of Japan it is often called Japanese baseball.

Japanese baseball only differs slightly from the MLB and is yet another way for bettors to wager on baseball.

How Do Japan NPB Odds Work?

Betting odds for Japanese baseball are the same as the MLB where bettors can wager on the three main bets: the moneyline, run line, and run total.

The moneyline is the easiest to bet on as players are predicting who will win the matchup between the two teams.

The spread is the same as the spread in American baseball. The sportsbook will give the matchup a run line, with 1.5 being the most common, that the favored team will have to win by. The team that is favored will have to win by more than the run line to cover the spread while the underdog either has to win outright or lose by less than the given number to cover.

The final way bettors can wager on Japan NPB is the run total, which is by betting on how many combined runs bettors believe the two teams will score. If they believe it will be more than the given number from the sportsbook, bettors take the over, while the opposite is true if they think it will be less.

Betting Strategy

When betting on Japanese baseball, there are a few strategies one can employ to boost their chances of their bet hitting.

Bettors should always do research into the teams they are betting on to see how they match up against each other and their history to help inform their bet.

Knowing how a team does against certain pitchers, and vice versa, how starting pitchers and a team’s bullpen do against batters, also helps, as it can impact the run total and run line in a game.

Doing research into a team’s bullpen is also helpful due to a relief pitcher’s ability to either blow a lead or save a game. Knowing who is likely to be available in the bullpen to play in relief and their ERA and recent performances will aid a bet.

Finally, looking at a team’s recent history and how they have been performing recently is important as well, because if a team is on a hot or cold streak, that could play a factor in the matchup.

Prop Bets

Prop bets are another way for bettors to get involved in betting aside from the three most common bets and involve bettors making predictions on certain events that will happen in a game or stats a player will record.

However, prop bets aren’t as common in Japanese baseball as they are in the MLB, and it may be harder to find them in the sportsbook.

How to Bet on Japan NPB Lines & Odds

There are three main bets when it comes to betting on Japan NPB: the moneyline, run line, and run total, and all three are similar to traditional baseball.

Understanding the Moneyline Bet in Japan NPB

The moneyline involves bettors predicting who will win the game.

The favored team is represented by negative odds while the underdog will be given positive odds, with the higher the number indicating the greater the favorite or underdog.

For example, if the Orix Buffaloes are favored against the Nippon Ham Fighters, Japan NPB odds may give Orix -270 odds and Nippon +240 odds.

A bettor would have to place a $270 bet to win $100 on Orix winning, while they would win $240 on a $100 Nippon bet if either were to be correct.

Grasping the Run Line and Run Total Bets Effectively

The run line is a bet that has the bettor predict how much a team will win or lose by.

Japan NPB lines will give a game a run line, and to cover, the favored team must win by more than that. The underdog must win outright or lose by less than the given number to cover.

In the case of the aforementioned game, the sportsbook gave a run line of 1.5. Orix must then win by two or more runs to cover, while Nippon has to either lose by one or win outright to cover.

Finally, the run total has bettors project how many combined runs teams will score in a matchup. Japan NPB betting odds will give a number, and a bettor will place a wager on the total being either over or under that number.

For the Orix-Nippon matchup, the sportsbook set the total at six runs. If a bettor believes the two will score more than six, they bet the over, while they would take the under if they think it will be a low-scoring affair.
