Struggling Teams Look to Lessen the Gap in Their Respective Division Races

Teams hope to boost their spot in the playoff race when the Atlanta Falcons visit the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Teams looking to boost their standings in their divisions will meet when the Atlanta Falcons meet the Washington Commanders on Sunday.

Atlanta is coming off a 27-24 win over Chicago and is second in the NFC South behind Tampa Bay. The Falcons sit with a 5-6 record while the Buccaneers are 5-5.

Washington last beat the Texans 23-10, but remain last in the NFC East with a 6-5 record. The Cowboys and Giants are tied for second in the East at 7-3.

Both teams will be looking to gain ground as playoffs draw closer, leaving the Falcons and Commanders with much to play for in Week 12.

Atlanta’s Ground Game Leads

The Falcons have relied heavily on the run game. Although Atlanta is in the bottom seven in the NFL in average yards a game, averaging 313.8 yards, it is third in rushing yards, averaging 159.4 rush yards a game.

Running backs Tyler Allgeier and Cordarrelle Patteron and quarterback Marcus Mariota make up a solid rushing trio.

Allgeier leads the team with 498 rushing yards, also recording a touchdown, while Patterson leads with five rushing touchdowns, and 454 yards. Mariota has 372 rushing yards for four touchdowns.

In Atlanta’s win over Chicago, the Falcons had 149 rushing yards at 5.3 yards per play. Allgeier led with eight carries for 55 yards while Patterson returned a kick 103 yards for a touchdown.

The Falcons tend to rely on the run game, however the Commanders’ sixth-ranked run defense will make it tough.

Commanders Keep Rolling

The Commanders have won five of their last six games, with their defense playing a large role in that success.

Washington has held its last six opponents to 21 points or under, with four of those teams held under 20, and the Commanders now average 20.3 points allowed a game.

The Commanders are sixth in the league in total yards allowed, with teams averaging 308 yards against them, and 11th in sacks, recording 29.

In Washington’s win over the Texans, Houston was held to 148 total yards, including 21 rushing yards.

The Commanders also activated defensive end Chase Young off of the reserve/PUP list, though his status against Atlanta remains up in the air.

If he does play, the former Defensive Rookie of the Year would add a boost to an already strong defensive unit.

Atlanta vs Washington Prediction

Although both teams are coming off wins, Washington has the upper hand with the game at home and the superior defense.

Washington has a strong run defense, and with most of Atlanta’s offense coming on the ground, it may be tough for the Falcons to find success.

Taylor Heinicke has helped lead the Commanders’ offense, and with Atlanta’s defense near the bottom of the league, Washington should earn another win.
