USA AHL - THE AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE

Overview

The AHL or American Hockey League is the secondary North American professional hockey league. The AHL teams tend to be called ‘farm teams’ to the National Hockey League, where AHL teams are affiliated with nearby NHL franchises and provide players opportunities to be called up to play for the NHL teams. The league was established in 1936 and now consists of 31 teams across the United States (26) and Canada (5).

American Hockey League teams hit the ice each season with hopes of winning the Calder Cup, the Stanley Cup equivalent of the AHL. The framework of the American Hockey League is nearly identical to the National Hockey League, with two conferences – Eastern and Western – divided into two divisions apiece.

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division:

  • Bridgeport Islanders (Bridgeport, Connecticut) (NY Islanders).
  • Charlotte Checkers (Charlotte, North Carolina) (Florida Panthers).
  • Hartford Wolf Pack (Hartford, Connecticut) (NY Rangers).
  • Hershey Bears (Hershey, Pennsylvania) (Washington Capitals).
  • Lehigh Valley Phantoms (Allentown, Pennsylvania) (Philadelphia Flyers).
  • Springfield Thunderbirds (Springfield, Massachusetts) (St Louis Blues).
  • Providence Bruins (Providence, Rhode Island) (Boston Bruins).
  • Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Wilkes-Barre Township, Pennsylvania) (Pittsburgh Penguins).

North Division:

  • Belleville Senators (Belleville, Ontario) (Ottawa Senators)
  • Cleveland Monsters (Cleveland, Ohio) (Columbus Blue Jackets)
  • Laval Rocket (Laval, Quebec) (Montreal Canadiens)
  • Rochester Americans (Rochester, New York) (Buffalo Sabres)
  • Syracuse Crunch (Syracuse, New York) (Tampa Bay Lightning)
  • Toronto Marlies (Toronto, Ontario) (Toronto Maple Leafs)
  • Utica Comets (Utica, New York) (New Jersey Devils)

Western Conference

Central Division:

  • Chicago Wolves (Rosemont, Illinois) (Carolina Hurricanes)
  • Grand Rapids Griffins (Grand Rapids, Michigan) (Detroit Red Wings)
  • Iowa Wild (Des Moines, Iowa) (Minnesota Wild)
  • Manitoba Moose (Winnipeg, Manitoba) (Winnipeg Jets)
  • Milwaukee Admirals (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) (Nashville Predators)
  • Rockford IceHogs (Rockford, Illinois) (Chicago Blackhawks)
  • Texas Stars (Cedar Park, Texas) (Dallas Stars)

Pacific Division:

  • Abbotsford Canucks (Abbotsford, British Columbia) (Vancouver Canucks)
  • Bakersfield Condors (Bakersfield, California) (Edmonton Oilers)
  • Colorado Eagles (Loveland, Colorado) (Colorado Avalanche)
  • Henderson Silver Knights (Paradise, Nevada) (Vegas Golden Knights)
  • Ontario Reign (Ontario, California) (LA Kings)
  • San Diego Gulls (San Diego, California) (Anaheim Ducks)
  • San Jose Barracuda (San Jose, California) (San Jose Sharks)
  • Stockton Heat (Stockton, California) (Calgary Flames)
  • Tucson Roadrunners (Tuscon, California) (Arizona Coyotes)

In the future, the Coachella Valley Firebirds will be joining the league as a farm team affiliate for the Seattle Kraken who just began their first season in the NHL.

Once the regular season closes, the top eight teams in either conference head to the playoffs, until we narrow it down to the Championship for the Calder Cup. The format for the playoffs and finals is almost identical to the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs.

HOW TO BET ON USA AHL ODDS

Throughout the regular season and the playoffs, you will find a great selection of AHL betting odds which can be a great supplement to your NHL betting. These AHL odds will tell you the likelihood of your bet winning and are important to keep an eye on if you plan to bet on the games. Depending on the type of odds you prefer to use, you may view the odds in a different format than other sports bettors – you can use American odds, decimal odds, or fractional.

If you’re betting on AHL odds, you will want to learn how to bet on ice hockey and learn about the popular hockey types.

Moneyline wagers are straight-up bets on any given AHL game. You will find these odds on each game, either team will have odds based on their likelihood of winning the game, and you simply have to pick which team will win.

For point spread betting, you can look at the AHL teams playing in a game, and the underdog team will have a few point lead before the game starts (+), and the favored team will have to win the game by that many points (-). Essentially the underdog is given an advantage, they simply need to win, or lose by less than the point spread number.

When it comes to betting totals, you are betting on the total number of goals both teams will score in the game. If the total for a game is 5.5, you can bet on the under if you feel there will be less than 5 goals scored by both teams, or you can bet the over and bet on there being more than 6 goals by both teams.

Prop betting is a fun way to bet on AHL games, however, you won’t find the huge selection you’d find on any of the NHL games on the calendar. For bigger games, you can find a bigger variety, but you might find team props, player props, and game props on AHL games. You might choose to bet on a certain player to score, or how many goals a player might score, or even betting on whether the game will go into overtime.

If you’re wanting to bet on even more hockey than just the NHL, you can find some great AHL hockey odds on the AHL right here at BetUS Sportsbook.
