Overview

The Grey Cup, the CFL’s championship game, has a long history that predates the forming of the Canadian Football League. The Grey Cup was commissioned in 1909 and given to the Canadian Dominion Football Championship winner.

In 1958, the Canadian Football League assumed the Grey Cup after a merger between the Western Provincial Football Union and the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union. The two football leagues were turned into two divisions following the CFL merger. The Interprovincial Rugby Football Union became the East division of the CFL, while the Western Provincial Football Union became the West division of the CFL.

The winner of the West division faces the winner of the East division for the CFL Grey Cup.

As of the 2021 season, the journey to the CFL Grey Cup begins with a 14-game regular season. After the regular season has been completed, the top three teams in each division will move on to a two-week playoff format.

The first week has the second and third-place teams face each other. The winners of these games will then meet the first-place team from their division. This game is known as the Division Finals. The winners of the Division Finals then meet in the CFL Grey Cup.

When the 2021 CFL season started, some had the Hamilton Tiger-Cats as the predicted CFL Grey Cup winner. They were in the previous CFL Grey Cup but fell short to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
