Hoosiers Outlast Hurricanes in Classic Contest

The Indiana Hoosiers were 100-1 to win the national championship in college football odds at the beginning of the season. They not only defied them but did something no team in college football had done since Yale in 1894.

Indiana won the national championship with a 27-21 victory over Miami on Monday at Hard Rock Stadium. They went 16-0, had the Heisman Trophy winner in Fernando Mendoza, and rule the college football world.

The Hoosiers needed a last-minute interception of a Carson Beck pass to seal the natty. There was enormous criticism of Miami being chosen for the CFP 12-team system. However, the Hurricanes proved they belonged. They covered the College Football Championship Game odds in giving Indiana a scare until that last pass ended up in the hands of Jamari Sharpe, an Indiana DB. The Hoosiers were 16-0 but failed to cover the college football lines that had them 8.5-point favorites. The totals line was eclipsed by a half-point as it was set at 47.5 points.

What Was Learned About Indiana?

College football has changed drastically in recent years. Realignment, the transfer portal, and NIL money have turned the game into a financial battle in many aspects. Schools that never had a chance are benefiting from rich boosters and sponsors to land prized recruits and transfers. The game is in a chaotic period.

Indiana hired its coach, Curt Cignetti, from James Madison, and he turned a program that struggled into one that had an incredible season. There were doubters about the Hoosiers until they went into Oregon in October and downed the Ducks. The Big Ten has strong teams โ€“ it is top-heavy โ€“ and college football odds took notice of Indiana and its talent for the rest of the season.

They were the top seed in college football lines when the 12-team playoff was set. That was unquestioned after two postseason wins, toppling Alabama and Oregon by a combined 94-25.

This is a beast of a program, and one can only imagine what players and recruits will be looking to call Bloomington, Indiana, home.

Miami Proved It Belong in Playoffs

Miami was highly ranked through the early part of the season. The Hurricanes’ defense was scary good. Miami hit a couple of potholes in games they were favored in college football odds against ACC foes, Louisville and SMU.

Those two losses left Miami in a precarious position when the postseason playoff field was set. Would it be the Hurricanes or Notre Dame that had won 10 in a row to finish their season? There was a big mark on both teamsโ€™ schedules because Miami beat Notre Dame in the first game of the season and that eventually tilted the invite in favor of the Hurricanes.

They upset Ohio State in a first-round playoff game and then held off Ole Miss in a semifinal contest. Mario Cristobal has a talented roster on both sides of the ball. Malachi Toney is one of the most electric players in college football. Do not be surprised to see the Hurricanes as a force going forward.

College Football Post-Mortem

In the end, it took a coach with a vision and belief on how to turn a program that had been to a Rose Bowl in 1967 and not much since into a national champion. Cignetti grabbed former James Madison players in the portal. His biggest acquisition was Mendoza, who transferred from Cal after two seasons with the Golden Bears.

He will likely be the favorite in NFL draft odds to go first overall to the Las Vegas Raiders. Cignetti says he is a college football coach and does not aspire to work in the NFL. How long will Indiana be able to keep him? He is sure to be coveted by other schools. Indiana has something going for it now, though, it is a power like the bigger names that would love to have a coach like Cignetti.

A toast to Indiana and Coach Cignetti, who said he would settle for a beer to celebrate.

Spreads, Moneylines & Totals

New to the game? Letโ€™s break it down. The college football spread is the great equalizer. If you see Ohio State at -7 against a hypothetical opponent, the Buckeyes need to win by more than a touchdown for you to cash your ticket. If you back the underdog at +7, you win if they win outright or lose by less than seven. Itโ€™s about the margin, not just the “W”.

The college football moneyline is pure simplicity: pick the winner. If you think No. 1 Indiana continues its miracle run, you just need them to secure the victory, regardless of the score. Finally, college football totals (over/under) let you wager on the combined score. Expecting a shootout in the Oregon vs. James Madison game? Hammer the Over. Expecting a defensive grind? Look at the Under.

Futures, Props & Parlays

College football futures allow you to invest in long-term outcomes. Think Georgia has the grit to run the gauntlet? Grab their futures price now before it shortens. For more granular action, check out college football props. You can wager on specific player performancesโ€”like a quarterback’s total yardage or a receiver finding the endzone.

Want to turn a small stack into a massive payout? Combine multiple selections into a parlay. You could link the Texas A&M moneyline with the Over in the Ole Miss vs. Tulane game. Football parlay odds multiply with every leg you add, boosting your potential return significantly. Just remember: every leg must hit for the ticket to cash.

College Football Playoff & New Yearโ€™s Six Odds

This isn’t your dad’s bowl season. The new 12-team format means we have on-campus playoff games in December, including massive tilts like No. 8 Oklahoma hosting No. 9 Alabama.
