International Excellence
The greatest players in the world are featured on the international stage representing their respective countries, and it is an opportunity for hardball fans to catch a glimpse of today’s legends playing alongside tomorrow’s superstars. The unique aspect of the tournament is that we see players from different MLB teams unite under their national flag and play in the same uniform.
The first World Baseball Classic, or WBC, debuted in 2006 and coexisted with Olympic baseball until the latter was dissolved as an Olympic sport. The WBC is scheduled as a quadrennial tournament unless a catastrophic event, such as a global pandemic, forces rescheduling, as it did in 2021 when it was moved to 2023.
The tournament has been expanded to 20 teams, with the top four in each of the four divisions automatically invited to the next WBC. That leaves four spots available in which teams can enter through a qualifying tournament occurring the year before the WBC commences.
In the current format, each of the four pools consists of five teams, with one game against each of their fellow pool members scheduled in the qualifying round. From there, the top two teams from each pool advance to single-elimination quarterfinals (March 13–14), followed by semifinals (March 15–16) and the championship final on March 17 in Miami. BetUS has baseball betting odds for all of these matchups.
WBC Matchups We Want to See
World Baseball Classic future odds are updated as the tournament progresses, and odds for the matches can be found on every game throughout the tournament. It should be noted that the United States, Japan, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela were all installed as pre-tournament favorites.
Considering that the Dominican Republic and Venezuela both reside in Pool D, their Wednesday, March 11th, matchup is arguably the most highly anticipated game of the knockout round.
Assuming both teams have perfect records entering that contest, we could see both teams advance to the quarterfinals regardless of the result.
The World Baseball Classic odds are indicating that a rematch of the 2023 WBC final is also possible. Japan claimed its third title that year by defeating the United States, 3-2. It was an epic showdown that saw Japan’s legendary Shohei Ohtani battle his then-Angels teammate Mike Trout to a full count in the bottom of the ninth with two outs before hurling a slider down and away that caught Trout swinging at air. A thrilling end to a sensational game.
WBC Popular Bet Types
Betting on the World Baseball Classic is fun and easy. Just as BetUS offers a full section devoted to its MLB picks by some of the best baseball handicappers in the industry, the same can be said of its WBC menu.
Moneylines, run lines, totals, player props, and in-game betting are all available to those who want to feel the thrills and chills of WBC action. Let’s take a moment to explain what these wagers look like and why they are so easy to learn.
Moneylines
Moneyline bets are ideal for those looking to bet on the winner of the game without a handicap involved. Whether the team wins by one run or one hundred, it doesn’t matter. If your WBC team wins the game, you get paid.
A typical moneyline may look like this:
- Panama +450
- Puerto Rico -700
A $100 winning bet on Panama would return $450 plus the cost of the bet, or $550. To bet on the favorite, one would need to risk $700 to win $100, which means if the bet wins, the bettor would get their $700 returned plus their $100 profit for a total of $800.
Run Lines
As for run lines, they act the same as a point spread that is common in football. The run lines allow bettors to bet the favorite minus a designated number of runs, while the underdog will get the same amount as a head start.
Using the example above, a typical run line would look like this:
- Panama +4 ½ (runs)
- Puerto Rico -4 ½ (runs)
If Puerto Rico wins by five runs or more, those betting on Puerto Rico to cover -4.5 runs would win. However, if Puerto Rico wins by four or fewer runs or loses the game outright, those betting on Panama +4.5 runs would win their wager.
Totals
BetUS also has WBC totals, commonly referred to as over/under betting. This is simply the designated number of runs scored in a game, including extra innings. All one must do is simply add the scores of the two teams when the game is finished and compare that sum to the total they bet on.
If the tallied score is higher than the designated total, those betting over will win, but if it is lower, those betting under will win.
