What Are the Most Popular NFL Bet Types?

Betting on NFL odds means wagering on the sportsbook’s numerical assessment of how likely each game outcome is. Those numbers usually appear in three bet types, plus live betting:

  • NFL Spread: The spread handicaps the stronger team so both sides carry roughly equal betting appeal. The favorite is marked with a minus sign, the underdog with a plus. A team at -7 must win by eight or more points to cover; the underdog at +7 covers by winning outright or losing by six or fewer. Pay attention to whether the number is whole or has a half point attached. At a flat -7, a seven-point win is a push and all stakes are returned; at -7ยฝ there is no push and every result settles. Three and seven are the most common winning margins in football, so a line sitting exactly on either carries real push probability โ€” which is why the half point between 3 and 3ยฝ is worth more than it looks.
  • NFL Moneyline: The moneyline prices a straight-up winner and ignores the margin entirely. A favorite carries a minus number: at -150 you stake $150 to win $100 in profit. An underdog carries a plus number: at +200 a $100 stake returns $200 in profit, plus your original $100 back. The bigger the gap between the two prices, the more one-sided the market considers the game โ€” a matchup priced -110 either way is close to a coin flip, while -600 against +425 signals a heavy mismatch. You can convert any price into an implied probability: for a minus number, divide it by itself plus 100 (-150 becomes 150 รท 250, or 60%); for a plus number, divide 100 by the number plus 100 (+200 becomes 100 รท 300, or 33%). Moneylines aren’t always posted on every game, particularly when a line sits at or near a pick’em, in which case the spread is the only way to back a side.
  • NFL Totals (over/under): The total is a line set for the combined points both teams are expected to score, and you wager on whether the final figure lands above or below it, regardless of who wins. If the total is 45ยฝ, a 24-21 finish combines for 45 points and lands under; a 24-24 finish combines for 48 and lands over. Check the number rather than the winner, which is the habit that trips up newer bettors. As with spreads, half points guarantee a result while whole numbers can push โ€” a total of exactly 45 refunds both sides if the teams combine for 45. Totals also come with implied team totals, which split the number between the two sides and let you bet on one team’s scoring without taking a view on the outcome.
  • NFL Live Betting: Live betting means wagering on a game already in progress, with prices redrawn continuously as the score, time remaining, field position, and possession change. A team that opened as a 3-point favorite might be laying 10 after scoring twice in the first quarter, and totals move the same way: a scoreless first quarter pulls the number down, a shootout pushes it up. Markets are briefly suspended after big moments like a scoring play, turnover, or review, so a bet may not be accepted at the price you saw. Live prices also carry a wider margin than pre-game lines and move fast, so by the time you react to what you just watched, the market has usually adjusted. Live betting rewards having decided in advance what you’re waiting for.

NFL Betting FAQs

Typically, these come in three formats: moneyline, point spread, and over/under. Moneyline odds show how much you’d win on a $100 bet for the underdog (positive number) or how much you need to bet to win $100 on the favorite (negative number). Point spreads show the margin a team needs to win or lose by. Over/under bets are on the total combined score of both teams.

The NFL Draft takes place every spring, with the exact dates varying year to year. The 2027 NFL Draft is scheduled for Thursday, April 29 through Saturday, May 1, 2027, held on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. โ€” the first draft in the nation’s capital since 1941. As always, the first round takes place Thursday, rounds 2โ€“3 on Friday, and rounds 4โ€“7 on Saturday.

Futures stay open year-round. Game lines follow the calendar โ€” schedule release in spring, preseason odds through August, Week 1 lines up before preseason finishes.

Yes, with the caveat that NFL preseason lines move on rotation news rather than form, and totals sit lower.

The favorite is the team with the shortest price on the Super Bowl LXI odds board, and that team can change from week to week as results, injuries, and trades move the market. Check the live Super Bowl LXI odds for every team’s current price. Shorter prices mean the market sees a better chance: for example, a team at +650 carries an implied probability of roughly 13%, while a team at +1400 sits near 7%. Because a futures market covers all 32 teams, prices further down the board can offer different value than the favorite.

NFL Super Bowl odds represent the chances each team has of winning the championship. Keep an eye on the odds to make informed bets on which teams are likely to go all the way and win the Lombardi Trophy.

To bet on the NFL, select a betting market like point spreads, moneylines, or NFL props, and place your wager. There are numerous betting options available, ranging from regular season matchups to the Super Bowl, allowing you to explore different strategies.

The decision to place a bet over or under on NFL games relies on the analysis of the matchup and the game as a whole. The over and under is based on the combined points scored by the two teams. Look at the strengths and weaknesses of the teams participating in the game to make a determination whether there will be more points scored or defense played.

NFL lines are typically released early in the week, often by Tuesday, for upcoming games. These lines can fluctuate based on injuries, team performance, and betting trends, so itโ€™s important to stay updated for the best odds.
