Why are egg prices so high? This is the question asked by millions of people, and BetUS not only provides the answers but also has an entire set of egg price odds on which to wager, located on its extensive novelty odds betting menu.
Case of the Flu
The avian influenza (H5N1) outbreak, more commonly known as bird flu, has become the deadliest in US history.
Although some birds have died because of it, the vast majority of the 150 million that have perished have died due to farmers’ systemic culling to eradicate the highly contagious virus.
Egg Price
why have they risen so sharply? It’s simple economics: supply and demand.
Approximately 138,000 domestic birds are being slaughtered and discarded every day to eliminate the deadly virus, which means the supply of eggs has greatly diminished, causing the cost of those eggs that do make it to retail shelves to be that much more valuable and, thus, expensive.
Grocery stores, purveyors, and restaurants have watched their egg costs rise from $2.25 per dozen in September to a record high of $7 or more, while organic and specialty eggs fetch even higher prices.
According to the Consumer Price Index (CPI), retail egg prices rose a staggering 65% between December 2023 and December 2024.
However, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, from January 2024 to January 2025, the cost of a dozen eggs has spiked by over 96%, to the point where restaurants, particularly breakfast establishments, are imposing surcharges of 50 cents to $1 or more on every egg used.
