The Memorial Tournament is a PGA TOUR event annually hosted by Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The legendary Jack Nicklaus created the tournament in 1976 to honor all distinguished golf players of the past and present.
The event takes place around Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May. For 2023, The Memorial Tournament will take place June 1-4.
Like all PGA TOUR events, the Memorial Tournament has many betting options. At BetUS, futures, props, matchups, and specials are offered. Futures bets are the most popular, while props and specials are a nice change of pace.
How The Memorial Tournament Odds Work
Every bet will be assigned + or – odds. The favorite has negative odds, while the underdog is positive. This applies to props, matchups, and specials.
Most of the time these bets have two options. Props and specials usually focus on an event transpiring instead of the tournament’s result, and a matchup involves two golfers head-to-head.
For example, a Memorial Tournament prop could be over/under 65.5 strokes for the lowest round of the tournament.
Understanding how payouts work can be confusing, so here’s a crash course. In the over/under example, let’s say the over is the favorite at -115 while the under is +115. For the -115 odds, a $115 wager is required to earn a $100 profit. For the +115 odds, a $100 bet would win $115 in profits.
Futures bets are a bit different. Since tournaments have a large pool of players, golf lines offer many players to choose. Selecting the correct player to win The Memorial Tournament is a lot harder than it sounds, so the odds are raised. However, this also means a higher potential payout.
A futures bet on who wins the Memorial will have every golfer at + odds. Scottie Scheffler could be the favorite at +750, which means a $100 bet would earn a $750 profit.
Most Important Players
Muirfield is known as one of the most challenging PGA courses. It’s only fitting a legend like Nicklaus would create a difficult course.
Since The Memorial Tournament began, several all-timers have won the event. Nicklaus and Tiger Woods are two of the biggest names to win it. Woods holds the all-time record with five Memorial Tournament victories.
Lesser-known players have won the tournament in recent years. Billy Horschel is the defending champ after he won by four shots in 2022.
Patrick Cantlay emerged victorious in 2019 & 2021. Jon Rahm has also performed well at Muirfield. He won in 2020 and was dominating in ‘21 before withdrawing after testing COVID positive.
Collin Morikawa and Jordan Spieth are notable names with a history of playing well at the Memorial. Morikawa came up just short in 2021, losing to Cantlay in a playoff. Spieth finished 3rd in 2015 and 7th in 2019.
Going forward, Cantlay and Rahm are enticing names for Memorial futures bets.
