Reading the spread
Check whether the number is a whole number or carries a half point. A half point means the spread cannot push — every result settles on one side or the other. A whole number means a win by exactly that margin returns stakes on both sides, so it’s worth knowing before you bet either way.
Then check where the number sits relative to 3 and 7, the two most common margins of victory in football. A number below 3 means a field-goal win by the favorite covers. A number sitting on 3 or at 7 is where push probability is highest, if the line is a whole number. A number between three and seven offers no cushion in either direction: a field-goal win covers the underdog, and a one-touchdown win covers the favorite, with little room between. A number above seven starts to open space for backing the underdog even in a competitive game.
Also compare the two prices next to the spread. If they’re even, the market sees the number as balanced. If one side costs more than the other, that side is where the money — or the book’s own lean — is going.
Reading the total
The same whole-versus-half check applies to the total. A whole number can push; a half number always settles over or under.
Compare the total to the spread to get a sense of the expected final score: add half the spread to half the total for the favorite’s projected points, and subtract it for the underdog’s. A total toward the high end of the week’s board points to a game the market expects to be fast-paced; toward the low end points to a defensive or ball-control game.
Check the over and under prices too. Even pricing means no lean. A gap between them shows which side the market or the money favors.
